  1. Now THAT would be interesting...
  2. It's not a sound shop but lighting and grip. They will have some expendables like gaff tape and batteries. http://www.barbizon.com/index.php?loc_id=11 Glen
  3. This does bring up an interesting dynamic. Most of us have a lot of tools in the chest and want to be fair about providing a production what they request, need, and are willing to pay for. If production asks for a 744t, but a mixer only owns a 788t or a Nomad, I would not expect them to sub-rent the 744t or say no to the job. As soon as the necessary track count goes over 4 there may have to be a discussion... Glen
  4. Mix assist will not disable input limiters. High sample rate WILL (96khz). Setting the input for digital will also disable limiters. Glen
  5. Does anyone like using the Lectro leather belt clip pouches for their SM series transmitters? I have some I've never used, never will, but can't bring myself to throw away. 4 SMD/Q and 2 SM. Free to a good home in USA. Glen
  6. What kind of battery? I don't own LMa units but I know some older Lectro models didn't like Lithiums...

  9. Anyone else notice Freq Finder finding problems with Lectro assigned groups? In the past, I always used the built in compatibility groups on my 411a units to assist with coordination. The other day I noticed Freq finder calls attention to intermod on channels Lectro says are OK. (One example: From Lectro block 22, group "c" 45(570.100), 54(571.600), and 64(573.200). FF calls attention to intermod on 64...) Glen
  10. Having made that same decision, I say go for the 8. No penalty of increased size or weight and someday you will be happy you have those extra tracks. Post will probably be happy they are all part of the same poly file and not a separate poly file from another source. Glen
  11. Those 1/8" jacks aren't balanced audio either... ________________________________________________
  12. I cloned my laptop hard drive onto an external before updating to Lion. In a pinch, I can boot from that drive and still be running the old OS. I've only had to do that to access older filemaker databases to convert them for the new version. I still boot that drive on occasion just to sync mail and such but haven't needed to. Losing Quicken was a bummer; I'm not liking iBank so much. Glen
  13. I don't like the analogy, but if we are, it's like owning that Audi R8 and not having insurance...
  14. If this thread takes the direction of "what's the best case for the iPhone?" and anyone is looking; check out the Lifeproof case. Slimmer and easier to use than the Otter, and unbelievable protection. www.lifeproof.com Glen
  15. As I understand it, the iPhones need to see some kind of signal on the data lines, not just the 5v power. If you google it, lots of folks have schematics and youtube how-to videos explaining how to build the hack...
  16. That's all true but we can certainly get used to it, even expect it. I'm very accustomed to listening to boom in the left ear, lavs in the right ear. If someone ever requests the opposite, I have a difficult time monitoring. I will even monitor my way, and swap the channels on my hop. Interestingly, if I'm doing a shoot where I benefit from wearing a walkie, I found I HAVE to put that bud in my right ear. I tried switching ears with the idea that alternating would be good but it was extremely distracting and problematic. So aside from any other brain anomalies I'm suffering from, clearly there is a high degree of lateralization on some level. Glen
  17. I love the idea of this "year-end" topic but as I reflect, 2011 was light for gear acquisitions. I am now inspired to open a very nice bottle of scotch and ponder this... Glen
  18. I have been fortunate enough that the Epic packages I had to feed had the supplied 4-pin lemo breakout for TC and clock. It has worked fine. The mini-jack mic inputs have been a bit of an issue. One camera had a jack that really wanted to push the plug back out. Probably a simple defect and it was solved with tape. I'm sure it's been mentioned, but the input is still mic level only. Glen
  19. I couldn't agree more with the CUB-01 praises. I bought them for car mounts and they have been fantastic. It's the other times they have saved me that make me really appreciate them: Kitchen, wide shot forced boom out, not happy with lav/wardrobe mariage, but CUB-01 on kitchen island sounded remarkably dry and natural. Large front porch, impromtu bluegrass jam. Wooden crates and small whisky jugs were set dressing but had CUB'01s for instrument pickup (two guitars, and upright bass). Boom covered fiddle from overhead and the mix was nice. Couple laying on beach on stomachs, CUB-01 just in front of them sounded amazing. You may use them infrequently, but you will either be glad you had them or wish that you did. Glen

    744t

Not that I ever had problems, but on some hot summer days, the Sudd, Caribean, etc, the machine was almost too hot to touch (though working flawlessly). After switching my internal drive to an SSD, I have noticed far less heat from the unit. Glen
  21. I once wrote this email to a producer friend of mine: "I don't like being asked to "run audio" "record audio" or "roll audio". Likewise, I am not an "audio guy". In any of these examples, substitute the word "sound" for "audio" and all is fine. Here is why: "sound" refers to the vibrational transmission of mechanical energy that propagates through matter (yes, air is still matter) as a wave that is audibly perceived by a living organism through its sense of hearing. "audio" refers to the mechanical or electrical inscription of sound waves. Why does this matter? Recording sound is the task at hand and involves mic selection, placement, mixing, and finally, recording. The camera mic may indeed be recording audio but one would hardly consider that to be good sound. Hell, the tone oscillator is "audio". Sound is the bigger picture and tells the story from the original "performance" to the reproduction or construction of a perceived reality in the final piece. Audio is merely an electrical signal that was only a portion of that process. Similarly, a DP doesn't want to be asked to "encode pixels" because that is merely the means, not the ends, and it tends to eliminate the artistic nature of the endeavor. Assuming you've read this far, you now know a lot more about sound than most folks in production. Not that it matters a bunch but I will be much happier seeing "sound" on the call sheet than "audio". 22. I made mine out of ABS pipe available at any home improvement warehouse. It's just like the PVC stuff only black and a tad lighter. The black ABS looks more like worn carbon fiber rather than plumbing scraps. If your set on the soft case, I know a few folks that are happy with Orvis fly fishing rod holders. Glen
  23. For the ankle, NeoPax are fantastic. The waste belt could stand some refinement but the ankle packs are spot on. Go ahead and get the larger size pocket; an SMa will still fit securely enough but squeezing a larger xmitter into the smaller pocket will soon cause failure. Glen
  24. I never liked the Garfield pads. They stretch across the pads and seem to hinder fit and isolation. The stock Sony pads are problematic with fit and flaking. I replace them with Beyerdynamic DT250 pads: They are fantastic, fit great, and are very durable. (about $20usd.) Glen
