Hey guys, I love my Cooper 106+1, but there is one thing that annoys me about it. Unlike the 208, the private line toggle is a momentary switch, not a button. The switch, unlike the other switches around it, needs to be pressed up instead of down. This is very awkward if you need to get to the PL quickly while mixing a take. It's also very easy (sad to say I've done it) to hit the oscillator at a very bad time if you're not careful. I was wondering if anyone here has ever modified their 106 with a button instead of a switch and if you had any advice for someone wanting to do that. I've measured the PL button mounting hole on a 208 and the mounting hole for …

I have recently had my Deva 5.8 updated with the new screen and I now see a line along the right edge of the screen on the home screen. It's either green or white and it only appears in the view mode I like the best (long horizontal meters along the bottom) and it's distracting and annoying. Even more annoying is Zaxcom telling me first that they didn't see the line (but as you can see it's right there), and further that it can't be a problem with the screen since it's brand new, but with the front panel which would cost me $700 to replace. Which seems improbable since the lines appear on the screen only in a certain view mode, and before the screen update they did n…

Does anyone have any tips for mounting an HS2 to the talents foreheads? A friend was talking about some sort of head band that he had used in the past. Ideally I want to mount the mic to the forehead rather than round the side of the face. Cheers, Nick

I have a chance to buy a Mole Boom (103b) and perambulator near me for fairly cheap...Under $3,000. Some background: I've only been mixing a couple years, and almost entirely ENG/EFP stuff with a smattering of post work...it seems more production management stuff comes my way than sound these days. But work is work. As the economy recovers (I will hope), I want to move fully into location sound, and I will almost certainly be living in Oregon. I'm fairly mechanically adept, and have no problem doing a tear-down/rebuild and fabricating some more modern mic mounts. Anyway, the point of this ramble: Outside of LA/NY (or on the audition set of American Idol), is th…

Just curious, for those of you using the SD MM1 or MP1 in front of their wireless for booming, do you attenuate the signal out of the SD unit with a resistor in the XLR-TA5 cable, or do you simply turn the transmitter all the way down? And can you turn down the Lectros enough, especially since they upped the gain on the newer 400a Tx? The manuals on both SD units show line level output only. And by using the MM1 or the MP1, aren't you just going through a second pre amp? I like the idea of having better limiters than the ones on my Lectros, but I am wondering if adding the MM1 or MP1 is better than just turning down the transmitter so it cannot hit the limiter, an…

" Federal Communications Commission's proposed expansion of Part 74 licensing eligibility for wireless microphones: The FCC has set a very short deadline of February 20, 2010 for wireless microphone users to submit comments regarding the importance to them of wireless microphones, personal monitor systems, intercoms and wireless assist devices in their businesses and productions. The FCC hasn't reviewed the rules for Part 74 of title 47, Code of Federal Regulations, under which wireless mics are classified, since 1977. "They were written for TV networks and broadcasters," explains Mark Brunner, senior director, brand management, for Shure. "They were the only pe…

Hello! I've got a UCR401 in Block 21 I'd like to use as a camera hop, and in gearing up for some interviews, I'm increasingly in need of a pair of 411's for talent receivers. Ye Olde RAMPS yielded posts that expressed a preference for blocks 21, 22, and 25 in the SF Bay Area...but that was two years ago. In addition, I'm assuming that my talent receivers and the camera's non-tracking receiver should be on different blocks. My shoots will be in SF and Marin County, primarily. Admittedly, I tried to figure this out myself by using Sennheiser's freq finder, and it's a bit confusing...suppose I need to look for not clear channels so much as channels where the signal gain i…

http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/home_en.nsf/root/professional_headphones-headsets_professional-headsets_502451?Open&row=1 Sennheiser has no longer listed the Noise Guard function but did so a few days ago. However if you read the pdf manual it will show the option of an inline (need a different cable) noise guard function that will add some 18dB of SNR to the headphones attenuation of surrounding noise. Might be helpful for these noisy street locations. Matthias

I just worked with a boom op that was filling in, great guy Ryan Farris! He commented that I use the Sanken Cubs, Sanken lav's and the CS3E and I told him the Senn MKH 50's were my favorite mics. But I use the Sankens most of the time. Has anyone had good experience with the CS1's? Maybe my ears are changing?

Has anyone spent some time sending 3-4 channels from Bag to Camera (hard wire)? I am trying to decide whether to use 442 iso's out and bypass the out bound limiter or double up on 302s and get full metering and limiters. This is going to HPX 500 or a HPX300. I don't like relying on the camera input limiters if I can't keep an eye on the camera monitor. Compounding the uncertainty is it requires throwing a manual switch on the camera to tap the return on Channel 1+2 or go to 3+4. Any thoughts on the quality or character of these camera's limiters? By the way there is no interest in double system. Thanks for the feed back.

Hoping one of the many Deva users out there can help me out, because the manual is woefully ambiguous on this subject: when any effect (eq, comp, limiting) is applied to a channel, do you have the choice as to whether you apply it to the channel at the prefade, or before theix bus? Ideally, I would like to leave the isos raw, and only have eq and comp in my mono mix. Thanks in advance for your help, Adam

I know this has probably been brought up a few times in the past, but I wanted to get opinions of people who have used the DPA Lavs. I have used the Sanken COS-11's for years and love them, but I am always interested in trying new things. I know they are more expensive but can anybody notice a considerable difference( I know they are slightly harder to hide then the Sankens) and if so which model do people use for film. I know Jeff did use them and if not what did he switch to. Thanks, Steve Morantz

Has anyone used either this camera or these wireless mikes? We ran a test today with this combo. Levels into and out of the camera appeared good, but the levels into the headset were inaudible. Some Internet searching showed some potential problems with this camera, including not only low levels but loss of low end, but they weren’t necessarily from respectable sources. I’d love to hear if anyone here had any experiences with this setup. Thanks,

Lectrosonics SM SMD/Qa Belt Clip I love a company that listens to it’s customers. I got my new belt clip yesterday courtesy of Lectro from a request that I made ( as well as many others) for a belt clip similar to the UM style belt clip for the SM / SMD/Q style transmitters. Why? The existing options for the SM style transmitters were the leather pouch and the (stainless steel) clip. Neither of these were great solutions and often didn’t stay in place on cast, nor did any of the above allow for lav mic cable management. The new belt clip does. It's a bit smaller then the UM clip and made of blue anodized aluminum. The *only* thing (and there is no …

Hey everyone, I need some advice on what setting to use on my lockit boxes when shooting with a Varicam, at 60fps/59.94hz that's all the info I have at the moment, do I need to ask production anything else? I've had the Lockits for a few years, but never worked with a Varicam before, everything but a varicam it seems! The Lockit model number is ACL202CT Thanks in advance for any help. Jon
