For those of you who do post production, here's a link to a DIY guide for a cheap, fast RAID array. http://www.freshdv.com/2008/10/blazing-fast-4tb-raid-under-2k.html I actually built an 8 GB *EDIT: Should be 8 TB* version (came in at about $1800) for a production company that I work with from time to time. The only caveat is that the cables linked to in the article had the wrong locking mechanism. I had to pick up the correct ones (the ones with thumb screws) here: http://www.allstarshop.com/shop/product.asp?pid=19979&sid=25T2JLF568NK9MH3KGLAXHS13QWP815C Considering the fact that I've never set up a RAID array before, it was really pretty easy.

Hi everyone, I'm just recovering from a long and physicaly demanding gig this summer. here's a brief description. We were following 10 "voyageurs" as they recreated Alexander Mackenzies (first european to cross North America) journey by land across Western Canada (we went from Winnipeg, Manitoba to Bella Coola, British Columbia). The participants were wearing clothing and eating food authentic to the era and paddled most of the journey (except for long hiking sections) in a birch bark canoe. We tried to follow the route as accuratly as possible to the original one travelled by Mackenzie, and that meant we were in very isolated parts of the rockies. We could go 12 -13 d…

A question came up on another forum about inline low roll-off filters. I recalled that when I first started in the biz (early '70s) some older sound guys had these inline low roll-off filters that sort of looked like an old fashioned kitchen timer, I think they were continuously variable. Used w/ mono Nagras, they must have been mic level, and passed mic power DC maybe. I recall them being expensive and rare. Anyone remember these? Who made them? Philip Perkins

A bungalow office space just became available that's perfect for storing your gear. It's on the ground floor with no steps and has parking at the door. Just pull up and load or unload. You can set up inside for your own tinkering space away from home. There is a connecting door between two rooms and two separate entrances for each room if you want to seal one room off. Each room is over 20 feet long and over 8 feet wide each, including a bathroom. See unit at https://post.craigslist.org/manage/932588876/ju6yx You can rent one room for $495 or both for $895. It's located at 3489 #B&C Cahuenga Blvd W, near the 101 and 134 freeways (by Universal Studios and…

I had a comtek receiver (216) tossed in a toilet on my last show, i overheard someone in the production office saying that it was going to be put on ebay, since production "bought it". So look out, the serial number is: 250736 (no clip no pouch) the unit does not function properly!!

Hi All I seem to to be getting hits when I use my Sanken CS1 from crew and cast cell phones. (GSM). I ask for everyone to turn their phones off but silent mode seems about the best that can be mustered. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is there an inline filter that I can use - or is it to do with the pyscial size of the CS1 and the wavelength of the GSM transmissions? No problems with the 416...

I got some Belden RG-8X mini coax from a friend and I'm having a devil of a time finding a compatible 50 Ohm BNC connector and corresponding crimp tool/die. The cable has "YR44192" and "0988" printed on it, but neither seems to correspond to any of the usual four digit cable codes in the Belden catalog. It's a gray PVC jacket. Diameter is only very slightly wider than Canare star quad. Is this cable stock familiar to anyone and can anyone help? Thanks! Regards, Noah Timan

Hi All , Having just registered this is my first post . I know the fusion has been discussed on this forum before so forgive if i cover old ground . I have a movie coming up and the fusion just may be the right tool for the job . My current set up is - cart based DV 824 , pd6 for overshoulder , sonosax st8d mixer , audio rack and lectro 411s etc . The fusion appeals because of the weight , power consumption , flexibility etc and this movie will have both cart work and overshoulder work . Questions - Is the screen readable in sunlight . Does the track naming on the meters appear on the track name in the avid . If for some reason you need to use the cf card in MARF for…

how often do you guys clean your (panel) mixers? Just the outside, heavy dust, sand removal from the inside too or even cleaning the P&G faders? Or do you bring it in for service? I`ve got a Cooper 208 and I am wondering how much of a self cleaning process one can / should do? Cheers, Matthias

A reader of my review of the new Nagra contacted me to ask if I had observed any RF spray from the machine. He was interested in a recorder for over-the-shoulder work and wanted to know if it might desensitize his radio receivers. I hadn't actually made any tests with radio receivers but it seemed like something people would be interested in. With assistance from Peter Weibel and from our friends at Location Sound Corp. we conducted a series of tests to evaluation the situation. I also made some comparison tests with other machines. As best I can tell, any RF energy thrown off by the Nagra is so slight that it would have negligible effect on radio reception. However, r…

Like the title says, I'd like to power my Edirol R-09 (3V) off my 12 V bag supply. I can handle the solder side, I just need a bit of help on the down convert part. Overall, I like the R-09, but my biggest beef is with its 2 stage door. First stage to access the SD/USB, second stage to access the batteries. Dumb design; it's going to be the first thing to break. So, if I don't have to go for a battery change, I think it'll last longer. Thanks.

I was recently on set and overheard the producer telling the script super about a bluetooth Comtek-like device she had recently used in LA. I believe she said she could use her own headset. I am not sure if it was broadcast over the whole set or if she had to wear a receiver device. I can see a danger if it is broadcast in the clear, as anyone, including civilians, could then receive program, and I know bluetooth generally has a short throw. I was amused by the comment, as she held up the PR216, "This is the D.W. Griffith of filmmaking." Unfortunately I was unable to query her about it as she left set soon after. Any leads?

I just received an advance copy of a press release for a new Fusion recorder from Zaxcom. This is not a product I knew anything about but it looks exciting and would provide a level of function and capability I haven't seen anywhere else. Here is the Press Release: "Zaxcom Debuts New Fusion 12 Multitrack Recorder POMPTON PLAINS, N.J. — Oct. 22, 2008 — Zaxcom, a pioneering provider of professional audio equipment, today announced a new addition to its Emmy® Award-winning Deva product family. Okay, so I'm running the Comtek BST-25 with the phase right antenna, no problems. Suddenly I see the antenna LED blinking, indicating the BST doesn't think it's connected to an antenna. But it was. Of course first thing I think of is the cable, so I go to play around with the connection. Before my hand gets to the connector, the light stops blinking! I move my hand away and it starts blinking again. It was like a theremin's volume bar, when my hand got close to the phase right it saw the antenna, when I moved my hand away it stopped seeing the antenna. I looked around and saw I had put my sharkfins on C-stand right next to the right phase antenna, about 2…
