  1. i work in post sound on mow's, tv series and films in montreal. from what i see these days, the picture editor gets all the sound but while they cut, they only use track 1 (boom) and track 2 (lav mix). there is no more boom + lav mix being done. (i can't speak for reality or current affairs shows out there) our dialogue editors will go through all the tracks (boom, lav mix, iso's) and choose what is useful for the dubs (or mixes if you prefer). 2. technicolor is hurting in montreal. the word on the street is that there will be job cuts.
  3. thanks jeff, just donated some cash. that link worked for me. hope you keep enjoying working on this site. it's a great resource and information center along with a great community vibe. cheers, P.
  4. jeff, is everything working with that link to paypal? i just tried it and the paypal website gave me a message of Sorry — your last action could not be completed don't know why. maybe you could give me the email address we can send it to and i'll use that in paypal. P.
  5. the one place that thunderbolt is very usefull and apple hasn't inplemented it is in the mac pro towers. makes no sense to me whatsoever. the pros that need high data rate movment are not getting it. post sound and picture houses. they don't run 200+ tracks of sound on feature film mix with a macbook, imac or mac mini so why the hell do they only get them? 7. beware, this ice smells like it's been storing tuna.
  8. although i'm not recording on set these days, i did use a nagra in university for student films, and then on a few occasions for short and feature length films afterwards. that thing was braking my back when i recorded my friends feature over the span of 3 summers. i was the sound crew. so strapping that beast over the shoulder and booming the shot was a real workout. especially hitting hours 10, 11, 12 of the day. even on a few occasions we needed to double boom so there were 2 of us carrying mono nagras and booming the shots ourselves. i found it so cool that when i went to paris to shoot a short film and we rented gear from there, that same trusted nagra was what we used. such engineering beauty. 9. saw a doc a few years ago called "Nollywood Babylon." good insight into the nigerian film world.
  10. this is a surprise for some after the very positive spin Empire Investment Holdings put on the acquisition of the family of CSS studios... borrowed from mix magazine... Empire Investment Holdings, headquartered in Miami, Fla., announces that it has acquired CSS Studios, LLC (“CSS”), from Discovery Communications Inc. CSS Studios is a holding company that owns seven distinct businesses, which together comprise the largest independent post-production sound company in North America. Through this acquisition, Empire—a private investment firm focused on the acquisition and strategic management of business units from public and private corporations—adds post-production facilities Todd-AO, Soundelux, Sound One, Modern Music, POP Sound, Soundelux Design Music Group and The Hollywood Edge to its global portfolio. The CSS collection of businesses provide creative post-production sound services to major motion picture studios, independent producers, broadcast networks, cable channels, advertising agencies and interactive producers. The businesses operate out of nine state-of-the-art facilities across Los Angeles and New York City, staffed by top creative and technical talent. Empire states that its acquisition of CSS is part of a long-term strategic investment that aims to build value across the CSS brands and allow CSS to focus on the strategic direction of the company. “The Empire team understands and respects the importance of these companies to the creative community,” says David F. Alfonso, Empire's chairman and chief executive officer. “We intend to protect and enhance the company’s unique value proposition and creative leadership as the preferred destination for some of the most important filmmakers of our time. Our team is energized to begin working with the management team and the creative talent within each business. We will build upon the successes that the team of creative sound editorial and mixing talent has created over the years, while promoting an environment that will continue to set the standard and produce award winning results.” “Empire demonstrated a clear passion for the business and emerged as the right owner,” says Andrew Warren, chief financial officer at Discovery Communications. “We look forward to partnering with the team at Empire, as we focus on continuing to build on the body of award-winning work created by the best talent in the industry,” says Robert C. Rosenthal, president at CSS Studios. Empire engaged Ropes & Gray LLP, Lockton, RJC Group and Mr. J. Patrick (Rick) Michaels, Jr. from CEA Associates as its advisors for the transaction. Peter J. Solomon Company acted as financial advisor, and Proskauer Rose LLP acted as legal advisor to Discovery Communications.
  11. omni's work best in stereo with a sass or jecklin disk. maybe cardioids would suit your needs better.
  12. here's some pics... oops, i guess they're not loading properly. don't know why?

  14. anyone know german? how about some prices.
  15. kind of disagree with the above. the public determines a hit song. craft is writing a great song. art is writing just a song. (everyone can do it, it can be good or bad, you can like it or hate it as it's just a form of expression from the artist)
  16. try this yahoo group called http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/naturerecordists/ there are a few guys on there out of the uk and they are just the people you need to let you know where the quiet places are. they could also help you out with the surround mic as well. just one thing, these days there is almost no location that's without noise (sad & unfortunate). http://onesquareinch.org/about/
  17. continuing from the great post "eneloop batteries...?!", i would like to ask the question: are there any 4 battery chargers that will charge the batteries individually? (this i ask as a space issue for traveling) the great info i learned from that post was that a 4 batt charger, when charging a pair of batts at a time will not charge both batteries equally. i did not know that. i love this forum. P.
  18. sent an email to sound devices on tuesday for more info.
  19. don't know how the info will be used, but having to give a donation is a cool idea. a mandatory symbolic 1$ donation will give up those email addresses. i have no problem with that. and who knows, you just might get more that the 1$ suggestion. the general rules info that you have posted to the buy-sell page is the right idea to start with jeff. standard stuff. hope it runs smooth from here on in. P.
  20. thanks macrecorder, i heard about that trick. some are worried about it and others are in the same camp as you.
  21. cheers johnpaul215, i've got the white ones. merci pierre, je va chercher le "thread". P.
  22. ah, that's what i was meaning by the end cap problem (i just couldn't remember). and thanks for the info on SD fixing the problem. will discuss with them. thanks RP, i'm going to use eneloops as well. but not the "xx" soundslikejustin. cheers, P.
  23. hi, i'm going to contact sound devices on monday, but i just wanted to find out from you guys about the problem with using rechargeable AA's in the mixpre with the tube being too narrow and/or the end cap not picking up power. i've read posts where the batteries get stuck inside & the cap connector not making proper contact. i've also read that people sent them into sound devices to get modified at a cost of 80 to 100$. do the newer manufactured ones (just before the release of the mixpre-d) have those problems fixed or not? i wonder if at a certain serial number this problem was rectified by sound devices. i would appreciate if anyone who can shed a light. i'm trying to find a used model and would like to know if i need to search for a particular serial or date of manufacture. cheers, P.
