  1. When I take the bike I typically don't use road cases. I'll pack things in to backpacks and run bags. The gigs I do on the bike are things that involve a small 3 channel mixer, a couple wireless, and boom. Probably hops, and are known in terms of the location, duration, etc. I've done a lot of sit-down interviews with a talking head where I need one boom, one wireless, and I bring a light stand, knuckle, and boom cradle. The R1200GS is also a good bike for packing gear. Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com
  2. The show I'm working on now has been shooting in Dallas for the past 18 months with all transportation provided by the production company. However, when back in Los Angeles or even for a couple small day playing gigs in Dallas I'll frequently take one of my motorcycles: They are a 1975 BMW R90/6 and a 2013 BMW K1600GTL. I am amazed how much gear I can pack on the K1600! Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com

  5. Go to your local hardware store and pick up a threaded metal road with the appropriate size. Or Use a mic stand, C-Stand, light stand with adapter head, etc. Or Hold the mic/blimp. Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com
  6. I accidentally wired a power cable wrong for a 900S and toasted the power supply. It sounds like the polarity was reversed or you had too much voltage going to it. Time for it to be sent back to Zaxcom for a repair. Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com
  7. I could hear the gates opening and closing on nearly every dialogue line and Foley lacked proper perspective on a lot of scenes. I thought the sound overall was quite poor in that it felt very pieced together. Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com
  8. I would hire a good sound mixer with Zaxcom gear. Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com

  10. Does this sound person also have to assemble or create the sound effects for the play? Or is it running FOH for the shows?
  11. Yes, nothing like reinforcing the notion that working 10 days for $250 is acceptable. Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com
  12. UPSD = R x D(S+H+A) / 3.14 Where UPSD = UPS Driver R = Run D = distance from truck to door S = Snow H = Heat A = Animals 3.14 = 6.28/2 Solve for UPSD Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com

  15. What was in the front end between the front wheels? I'm trying to find a good picture of that car. Normally there is a U-shaped compartment under the bonnet (hood) in a Ferrari that is about 18 inches deep and about 25 inches long. 16. Rado, which Ferrari were you working with? The reason I ask is because the show I've been working on frequently shoots with different Ferrari's and I've always had room under the bonnet for a 788 with 7 wireless, hops, and IFB. Unfortunately, this gear is owned by the production company and I would much prefer they rent all my Zaxcom from me but, it can be and has been done with SD and Lectro gear quite successfully. But, perhaps you were dealing with a very different Ferrari than I've dealt with on my show. Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com

  18. Do not give it away for free. It's two, specialized pieces of equipment that must be invoiced accordingly. If you give it away you will be screwing over yourself and every other sound mixer out there. I've never understood the business model of "I'll buy a bunch of gear and then not charge clients for it." That's the best and fastest way to go out of business. 19. I agree that legal does not always equate to moral. However, the tax code absolutely is applied equally (and is available equally) to all individuals and corporations. Some know it better than others and some have deeper pockets to research the nooks and crannies better than others. However, companies like Apple get audited every single year...thoroughly. We individuals don't get audited every single year. Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com
  20. I'm glad you posed this question to the group. First, sedate the patient with the largest, heaviest tool at your disposal. Second, begin cutting into the patient near the area where the sedation was applied. Third, once a soft, grayish, substance is found you're in the right area. Poke, prod, and tinker until the patient is cured. Fourth, staple back together. Congratulations! You're a brain surgeon! 22. The difference between Apple and the Koch brothers, in your example, is legality. If Apple is following the tax code then there is nothing illegal about it. Now, if the law makers feel certain laws should be changed, updated, or modified then that is what can and should happen. And at that point hopefully Apple will follow those new laws as well. The US tax code applied equally to all individuals and corporations. Now, a large, wealthy corporation such as Apple certainly has more money to research ways of reducing their tax liability but there are no special rules or laws set aside for them. 23. Simply dictate to the camera op how he or she should be pulling focus or setting the color temp. Feel free to also critique them on their framing. Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com
  24. The needs of each application are a bit different, production sound being the most different and unique than the other three. You will have AC power available while on stage, in the studio, and at home. However, not always on location with a camera crew. So, you need to have a mixer capable of DC power for field use. The mic pres in the Nomad are quite good and very well suited for field use. Is there something about those 6 mic pres you don't like? For your other uses check out the Midas F series. Great mic pres, FireWire connectivity for your computer, plenty of routing capabilities, basic EQ, and can be used in the field if you need that many channels in front of your Nomad and you have AC power. 25. Simply hoping it gets better doesn't make it better. Saying no to crazy working hours, low pay, and unrealistic expectations is how improvements and change happen. Production Sound Mixing for Television, Film, and Commercials. www.matthewfreed.com
