Improperly used mics in movies and TV

That’s a kind of interior design that some of us here might be ok with lol!

apparently the actors playing boom ops didn’t understand that the mic should be pointed AT the person talking and not just wherever!

A bit of a departure from the usual shenanigans. I’m watching this Netflix true crime show, and all the interview segments are framing so wide that they literally have lights visible for most of the time, but still see fit to have the boom so high above the subject that it would basically be useless. I’m sure that the sound mixer objected at this clearly aesthetic choice on the part of production, but seriously, the fact that these interviews only use seconds at a time of the video portions, they really should prioritize the boom. It just makes my mind explode that someone would hinge the quality of their production on such a trivial aesthetic. 🤯

My guess is, the light stands and the hanging light look quite industrial and kind of look like they belong on that place and most viewers won’t recognise them as film gear. The mic does still look out of place and not really industrial, so I can kind of understand that choice.
Still, they could have done that as b-roll and then move in closer for the actual interview

Could be that the light casts a real nasty shadow on the subject’s face. Sure they could remedy that, but then the industrial look, as Constantin says, would be “moot”..

It sure looks like the mic is lit in such a way that if it were any farther down there would be a shadow. Some hot young DP with a bunch of cool lights has been told not to give sound an inch.

I can’t even count anymore the number of times I‘ve corrected this on sets I worked on. But a second before we start rolling some prop person walks by and „oh this is wrong“ changes it back and we roll.
