Just moving this discussion over to the "Computers" section... speaking as a guy who's heavily used Macs since 1986 (I held off until the Mac SE came out), to me, the operating system of choice is just a means to an end. I'm annoyed by Mac OSX, Linux, and Windows all the time. They all suck, they're all unreliable, and they're all evil. In more than 30 years of dealing with computers, I still don't trust them, and I use a whip and a chair to get what I need out of them. But Mac OSX gets out of my way better than Windows -- in my experience. When I use a Mac, the OS disappears and all I'm aware of is doing what I need to do. Windows and Linux just get in the way and a…

So here I am seventy years old and after fifty odd years in the business I have been dragged not quite screaming into the 21st century by the purchase of an Ipad 3. I told the assistant editor that I was thinking of sending the sound report (Once I'd bought the software) on PDF by email. "No bloody good to me I haven't got internet and what's the point of separating the sheets from the CF card as I need them both at the same time to sync rushes." I thought the lad had a good point especially his edit suite is less than a hundred feet from me. So I beg the question of all the people doing sound sheets on I phones, I Pads or android whatever what do YOU do with them? …

Ok so I know this has been addressed in lesser forms but I am trying to put together a master list. I have finally come off the fence and become a pad person or rather purchased a couple of iPads for use at home and work. I am looking to populate mine with the relevant apps for sound and camera problem is for every good one there are several that just don't quite work. so what should I look at for sound and camera work. I'm talking slate, logging, equipment inventory, working up quotes, anything else you can think of? Also apps that talk to each other if there are any, a dp had one last year for his dslr slate that if I had my own iPad would have linked to my…

Well, it finally happened... I had a hard drive failure in my 27" iMac. I have been using computers for a very long time and this is a first, for me. I know the phrase regarding drives: "it's not a question if it fails but when" so I guess I have just been incredibly lucky. The good news: drive replaced, no charge (AppleCare) and everything was backed up by TimeMachine. I am now waiting for TimeMachine to do its thing --- close to 900 GB on a 1 TB drive being restored ("About 2 hours and 55 minutes remaining"). Let's hope it all goes well.

Does anyone know how to power a MacBook Pro off of battery power, ie Meon or other DC battery backup system? I would like to wire the power cable to a 4pin XLR connector so I can run it to a hot strip or a Meon. Thanks.

Anyone that knows me well understands that I am a complete apple freak. However, today I ran into a little issue that made me look like a fool on my job. Just so everyone knows, when you flip the "silent" switch on the side of an iPhone, it will mute the phone. However, it does NOT mute SIRI. You must manually turn her down. I had my phone in my back pocket on what I thought was 100% silent mode. I guess my butt cheek activated siri, and it started talking to me saying I don't understand. Just letting everyone know so it doesn't happen to you.

Newbie in the house question and need help I need to setup for a location shoot which take place mostly inside a house for 3 weeks. Budget is low (of course) so I am thinking about computer recording so I can mix and have ISO tracks on file. Thinking using Soundcraft M8 mixer with my 003 racks with additional to all my wireless and one boom man. The boom man has his own 2 track SD system on the bag so I am not worry about him. Have any of you have this setup before and can you give me some opinions? Real cool Director and DOP, actually give me a nice space in the house for me to setup and time to do so. thank you,

I wanted to know how others use, transfer and store their data. I've seen posts here and there about this, but I didn't find a thread specifically about it. There's different options to consider here and with the ingenuity in the members of this forum, I'd be interested to hear your solutions, as this is an integral part of our work. If there's one thing I've learned, it's to back-up. Then back-up. Then back-up again. I have a 10 year-old cheap external hard drive that still works, and passes tests. I've also had internal 3.5 drives from reputable manufacturers completely fry on me within 1 year of purchase. With a steadily increasing amount of …

Just upgraded to my new 15.3" Macbook Pro. My old Powerbook G4 of course had a modem where I could send faxes over my land line. I used FAXstf Pro. What do you recommend for Internet faxing? There are multiple choices that give you a fax phone number and use email. The costs are all over the map, from about $17/mo. down to about $3/mo. Your experiences and advice will be appreciated. Also thoughts on any FW800 - FW 400 hubs, etc. Of course the moment I purchased it, I read that Apple now delivers them with non-reflective screens. I'm used to this. RL

On July 8, space shuttle Atlantis and four NASA astronauts lifted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. During the 12-day mission, they will transfer tons of supplies to the International Space Station from the Raffaello multi-purpose logistics module. Among several experiments they will deliver: Human Exploration Telerobotics-Smartphone will equip small, free-flying satellites called Synchronized Position Hold, Engage, Reorient, Experimental Satellites (SPHERES) with a Samsung Electronics Nexus S™ handset that features Google’s open-source Android™ platform. The experiment, will use the smartphone-enhanced SPHERES as remotely operated robots to conduct …

Hey iMac users, I have an iMac from about 2007 that just started shutting itself down randomly. In the middle of normal operation it will just go black as if the power cord was yanked from the wall. Other electronics on the same surge protecting power strip continue to operate normally. After the crash pressing the power button starts up the iMac normally. No warning messages from the OS appeared either before or after the "crash". The only other x-factor is that this behavior just started since I moved to a new apartment and i'm suspicious that the electrical system in the house is old and maybe causing the protective circuits built into the iMac's PS…

Lion Reviews Are Out: 'Great Value', 'Shakes Things Up', 'Very Few Bugs' Wednesday July 20, 2011 12:13 pm PDT by Jordan Golson Now that Lion has been released, NDA's are lifted and reviews are starting to come in. Here are some choice excerpts: David Pogue - New York Times: In Mac OS X 10.7, known as Lion, Apple went with the “shake things up” philosophy. It follows an old Apple pattern: embrace what’s cool and progressive, and ruthlessly jettison what it considers antiquated. That’s great if you love stuff that’s cool and progressive, and not so great if you hate people moving your cheese... The Lion upgrade, in other words, is classic A…

Fascinating and illuminating article with some real insight into the history of FinalCut Pro. Written by someone who really knows the story. It is not a review of the new application, FinalCut Pro X but a reflection with an historical context of Apple's release of the new software. Quote from the article: "Remember, when FCP was released, Apple stock was at $11 and they were largely considered to be on their way out. FCP 1.0 was released only a little more than year after Michael Dell famously answered the question about what he would do were he in charge at Apple with, “What would I do? I’d shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders”. At that time,…

I just read an article that has much the same perspective I was trying to say in my post regarding what "professional" means in our ever-changing, not always for the better, world of media creation, creativity, software and so forth. One statement quoted here says a lot: "When it comes down to it, Final Cut Pro X isn’t about alienating professionals: It’s about finding out just what a “professional” looks like in this day and age. That line has blurred tremendously in the last decade thanks to widely-available—and inexpensive!—personal technology. Filmmakers are putting together features for $11,000. TV crews have gone digital; and that’s not even covering the amoun…
