Anyone had a MOTU interface box fixed? A friend has a Traveler w/ dead phantom power on one input. What sort of turnaround does MOTU have with this stuff? I've never seen a service manual for this gear so I wonder if an indie tech would be able to do anything w/ it. Philip Perkins

I'm having some troubles getting TC from a 744t to a Motu 828Mk3 - specifically to do with 23.976 TC rate. The Motu SPMTE Setup app seems to read incoming TC at every other frame rate but 23.976...once I switch the 744t and the 828 to 23.976, the clock stops moving. It does generally switch over to different TCs when I switch it on the 744t (I get a pop-up window letting me know it's getting a different TC rate) - sometimes it detects the new incoming rate properly, and sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes it even notices when I've switched the 744t to 23.976 - and then it does the same thing - stops counting. This happens not only when I use an analog input on the…

Hi there, does the traveler handle 8 inputs with line level (+4dB) or are the s.c. instrument inputs not capable for that high level? Thanks, Matt

Hi sound people, I have uploaded pictures and information about my current mix cart that I used for the just finished Woody Allen film . Unfortunately the upload did not show up in the gallery section as intended due to an issue with the jwsound site software. You can see the pictures and info here: Email me with comments! Just caught this, which was announced in the past week or so: https://www.appleopenusa.com/Articles.asp?ID=140 This is obviously a Dell Mini netbook, modified to run Mac OSX. But I gotta wonder if it just might work with Metacorder. The thought of a 2-pound 10" laptop running a multi-track recorder is very tempting. One drawback is that the Metacorder screen is fixed up to a certain dimension, so it can't be shrunk smaller than about 12" or so. Still, this could be incredibly useful -- provided it's reliable. And let's see how long Apple waits before crushing these guys with a sledgehammer (sadly)... --Marc W.

http://www.videotoolshed.com/product/60/vtsrecorder/3 New audio app, very simple, will (they say) be very cheap, but will look at outboard multi-input interfaces. Most interesting to me is their claim that they can generate very accurate TC (2 fr in 24 hrs) on a Mac or PC w/o an external xtal or clock....a pretty good trick if it works, and worth the price for that alone. I'm still using a G4 1.5gb Powerbook as my MC/BR computer, but would like to move up to a newer Mac for this and other location audio tasks. What does having a MacBook Pro buy me re: Metacorder (and BR and Audacity etc) vs. a regular MacBook? Where does the Mini fit into this scheme? When I started w/ MC everyone seemed to be using laptops, is that still true or has the Mini become more of a fave for cart-based recording? Also--what's the upgrade I'd need to be able to go from my old G4 version of MC to the MacIntel version? I'm still using v. 1.2 something from last year--seems fine and stable on the G4, but I understand there was a rewrite for MacIntel? If I upg…

I recently purchased a 15" Macbook Pro (Version 8 with Thunderbolt, etc.). It has OS X 10.6.7 installed, and I haven't been able to get MLAN Auto Connect to work. Any ideas? I'm also using a FW800 to 400 cable to plug into the MY16 card.

New product from MOTU: UltraLite MK3 MOTU UltraLite MK3 I am not sure what has changed from the original UltraLite. If I remember, what was missing from the first UltraLite was no facility for external clocking. - Jeff Wexler

Hello all, I'm going to be upgrading my computer soon to a new MacBook Pro (15"/2.66GHz Intel Core i7/8GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x4GB/500GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm) and would like to be able to use it as a location recorder when the chance arises. I know at these specs that the computer should be up to almost any challenge (I'm buying at these specs because I do other work outside of sound that demand heavy work from a computer). Boom recorder seems to be the right choice of software for the job at hand (only need the lite version for starters. 128 channels on a 3 crew doco won't be happening any time soon!) but I'm a plainly out of my depth when it comes to audi…

Hi all! We´ve just updated our Pro Tools HD 3 PCIe to HD Native 9 and we´ve found that Apogee didn´t update its firmware to work with new Avid protocol. Yeap: looks horrible for us. We really have big investment in Apogee converters and what is more important; we are really use to these interfaces. PT 9 recognizes them but these doesn´t receive neither transmit any audio. We connect them through X-HD cards...

I don't know if my original post on this topic went thru or not. Apologies for the repeat if it did. This is the setup for a highly unstructured multicam video shoot at a new age groove-and-drum-fest for a new PBS doc. 20+ drummers (lost count) spelled by ukelele and guitar songs. A drum-wearing music director w/ a wireless lav. Tiny space, lots of audience participation, singing, clapping and astonishingly loud drumming. Philip Perkins

Take, 1. Is it possible to use OSC commands to control transport on Boom Recorder? 2. Any plans to incorporate a small menu to control a talkback channel for outputs? I ask because i've been considering setting up a mrmr controller for boom recorder with my ipod touch. http://createdigitalmotion.com/tag/mrmr/ A

Hi guys, Just been wondering about how to do timecode with Pro tools 9 and my 003. I have lost several gigs lately because I don't have a recorder that does time code. I have a Tascam DR-680 and a SD442. I know from the studio that I can stamp the tracks with timecode by basically recording a track with a spmte file, but how then to sync cameras? I probably just need to break down and get a 788t, but cant quite afford it yet. Any thoughts on recording or doing playback straight out of pro tools with timecode(without owning SD or Zaxcom)? Some one mention to me that JLaudio makes a box that converts word clock in to smpte...Don't sound reliable to me?? Thanks …

Just a plug from a satisfied customer for Reaper, as a basic but pretty deep computer audio editor etc for location work. I just got a new location mac laptop, and didn't want to spend the $ for ProTools 12 for it (req. for El Cap). Reaper is $60 for the lowbudg license, works pretty much exactly the same PC vs Mac, and I was able to figure most basic things out pretty fast without a manual. Cockos improves it all the time and there is a huge community of users, forums, videos etc to help you. The "higher" functions of a DAW like PT (surround, heavy mix auto, conforms etc ) are probably possible in Reaper but I'm not likely to go there. I just needed a multitrack rep…

Since my show is on it's scheduled hiatus, which of course is tied in to the possible SAG strike, I have some extra time on my hands. I explored the Audiease site and two of it's plug-ins called "Altiverb 6" and "Speakerphone". What I am impressed with is the incredible range of choices for manipulating sounds wether it is for Film/TV Final sound mixing or music production. These plug-ins seamlessly integrate with Pro-Tools. "Speakerphone" can process sounds into hundreds of possible speakers, rooms and environments. Walter Murch used to do this in a practical way. He called it "worldization", simply put he would output a source through different speakers and re-re…

Premiere Pro 6 + Sennheiser Shotgun + FW Motu Ultralight = Voiceover Direct to Sequence?
by AlexEckhart- 2 replies

Hello! I have been trying to get Premiere Pro 6 to recognize a Firewire mic input without success. Someone who put up a tutorial on getting Premiere to recognize his USB mic told me that with proper drivers this shouldn't be a problem, but Adobe says these FW mics are not supported. Does anyone know of a workaround? We have the Sennheiser shotgun and don't want to downgrade quality, but simply cannot get the Sennheiser to show in Audio Hardware. Any ideas? Thanks so much! Best, Alex

Preparing a PC to record.

Here's the setup: Presonus preamp direct into a Digigram VX440 into my laptop (1.8ghz AMD, 512mb ram) using Cubase SX as a recorder. Three tracks at 44.1k/24bit. When I played back the recording, I had obviously run out of something; RAM, buffer, or CPU speed. Lots of errors. I am upgrading to a stick of 1g RAM which may take care of all the issues. Also probably going to record at 16bit next time. My question is, how do those who do this regularly (and maybe on critical things unlike my failed recording, thank God!) prepare your computer to record. When I start up my PC, and since it is not strickly dedicated to recording, many apps launch and probably run in th…

Not exactly "Recording Direct to Computer" but sort of. I have had no experience with this but looks interesting. "Pro Audio To Go turns your iPhone into a 48 kHz professional audio recorder for use on location by news reporters, journalists, documentarians, musicians, DSLR videographers, filmmakers, producers and editors. With a single tap on your phone, you can record an AIFF audio file in 48 kHz. Upload the file directly to an FTP server or email it, then download and instantly begin using it in your editing system's Timeline. No conversion necessary!" Pro Audio To Go
