So I'm looking at a shotlist for a shoot that I'm going to be on, and there's one portion which takes place in a bathroom with a woman in a tub soaking in a bubble bath. There are a number of lines that have to be done. Some wide, some medium and some CU, but all different lines and by the looks of it, there isn't complete coverage. Last time I've dealt with a bubble bath, I was able to work around the bubble popping noise by just going without bubbles and covering it in the closeup. So now, I'm faced with a wideshot w/ bubbles and dialogue, medium w/ bubbles and dialogue, and a closeup w/ dialogue with all shots containing different lines. So I was wondering…

After sending 0 tone from a 442 to a Sony DSR 500 and setting its level at -20, I was getting typical peaks at -6dB on the 442. The camera op requested peaks at -20 on the camera (0 on my 442). He said anything over that and it would distort. Although the headphone return was clean, I obliged him, but warned him of under-record. Tonight I get an email in which he says the first section was distorted. He didn't say whether the distortion was visible on the waveform of just through the monitors. I called and left a message asking him to put the offending tape back in the camera and listen to the headphone output. Does anyone have any info on the DSR500 that …

I've had a few days of process trailer work with three actors in a car talking in scenes with 5 and 4 pages repectivley. Although I would usually like to hard wire, the way this show shoots precludes that, so I've resorted to going wireless to both plant mics and the occasional wired actor. I purchased the PWS Passive antenna splitters for my 411a's along with my PWS helical etc. It's working pretty well.

When is it okay to use the camera's time code as the master, rather than use the sound mixer's? Or should the sound mixer always control the master time code?

I am currently in a debate about wether to LAV mic and record all actors in a scene (on separate tracks), even if they are not in the current shot. So the two sides are: 1.) If the person is not in the frame, you don't want to confuse the editor with an overabundance of tracks nor do you wantto give them the option to use the sound (particularly when they are not being boomed). 2.) It is not unheard of that an editor will use the dialogue in a scene from a less favorable sound shot, so having them mic'd helps prevent a disastrous cut. Also, it is goo for reference and to give the editor options if he needs to pull words or lines from other takes. It also helps the…

Hello my name is Carrie and I am a sound mixer here in LA. Currently I am running a SD442 and 744t with a couple of Lectros or G3's and Schoeps boom mics. I have recently joined the union, have 29 union days and desperate for that final needed day so I can be on the roster. As I have grown as a sound mixer my kit has also grown with me and I've come to realize that four channels are just not enough. I'm thinking that I would like to move to a boom recorder system with my laptop. That part is all easy. Now we come to why I have joined this group. I am wondering what are your thoughts on the Mackie ONYX 1640 verses the Yamaha 01V96VCM. This is a small bit of growth …

Hi: I am a newbie to both this forum and to sound mixing. I've gone from limited knowledge and equipment at the start of this year to $35K in sound gear and 2 paid gigs so far this summer. I have been hired to shoot some footage to create a "sizzle tape" for an LA company pitching reality TV shows. Its this coming weekend. 2-days. They are less concerned with the audio/video quality than with how the subjects behave on camera. Will be shot wityh both a Canon 5D and a 7D. They want 4 "actors" lav'd plus ambient sound. They do not need iso tracks and timecode is irrelevant. They want it simple, so I will be mixing 4 lavs + 1 boom down to 2 channels. I have 2 C…

When we must use lavaliers-only to capture the dialogue of a man with a very hairy chest... We have all had to deal with hairy chests. I thought I'd start up a thread to discuss techniques. Most of my work is not on projects with a wardrobe department at all. From what I've read here for scripted narrative stuff with a wardrobe dept. there is the option to ask wardrobe to put an undershirt on the actor. Use Country B6 out in the open away from undershirt. Try to hide lav in hair with cable down the back of neck. Even with an undershirt would you recommend mounting lav to the outergarment only? What are the other options? What about the veterans w…

I'm in the planning/research stage of a documentary which would ideally include some interviews with and footage of people who are breaking certain laws. These crimes range from simple misdemeanors to federal felonies. Does anyone have any experience filming this sort of thing? I've seen plenty of "hidden identity" interviews and such where the subject remains anonymous, but if they're on camera admitting to breaking laws or actually being filmed breaking laws, do I have to worry about becoming an accessory to their crimes? What can I do to make sure their identities are legally protected once the film is published? I don't want to promise them that they'll remain an…

I just wanted to say thanks to Laurence Abrams from IATSE 695, and the very nice people at J.L. Fisher for taking over two hours of time with me today on the Fisher Boom. I have never been to the facility before, but they have an amazing machine shop there, and hundreds of booms ready to go! I got some great hands on training on the 16' and 26' models, and though I did well, I got a lot of appreciation for this remarkable piece of equipment, and for the people who operate them! If anyone reading is a 695 member, I encourage you to take advantage of this service, and if you're not, I bet that J.L. Fisher would let you come in and look around too! What's even better, I foun…

There was a thread in a tribute to Tony Curtis on British TV the other night given by the director Alain Zaloum. I did Alain's very first movie in Montral in 1990 and I would love to contact him. Anyone have any ideas how I could find his email address. He appears to be working out of Hollywood now. Malcolm Davies. A.m.p.s.

I am setting up the TC workflow for this tv pilot. Sony Pictures procedure at this point is to issue Denecke sync boxes (I don't know what model) which I am to jam from my Deva at 29.97. Then boxes go on cameras and on Deva (with Deva set to continuous jam). TC is fed to camera as audio on Ch. 2. I haven't gotten sync boxes yet but with Deva set to 29.97 and jamming Denecke TS-3 slate, I see "snc error 30" on slate. The slate is set to position 1 which is 29. The older TS-2 (just upgraded to support 23.98 which we are not using) does not display this (but I think the TS-2 doesn't display these messages anyway). So, what gives? Why the error message?

Hey all, I'm new to the forum but have been lurking under the radar for a while reading old topics and keeping an eye on what's going on.....I'm thinking of starting up my own freelance business in this area and would like some advice if anyone would care to help. Sorry if the post is a little long. I live in Derry, Ireland at the moment, and want to set myself up as a freelance production sound mixer/engineer/boom op to work for anyone who might be in the area filming documentaries, films, working freelance for the BBC etc...as well as getting my own jobs with my friend who is also setting himself up as a camera operator. For example, we could hire ourselves ou…

Taken from a local show done daily. I was a bit surprised to see how they handled the "equipment", on this particular show. Fast forward to about -3:10. What do you think, acceptable or not? Just gave me a chuckle, and had to share. http://www.ksee24.com/features/central-valley-today/THE-BUZZ-ON-TEMPUR-PEDIC-103657434.html

The Chase It has few pieces of good writing here and there indeed. But the rest of the show sucks. Storyline is retarded. Too much wrong stuff to mention. I wonder if the good cast will keep the show alive for more then 2 seasons. The EVENT Just awful.

I got an email today regarding a possible job, but not quite sure if I'm what they're looking for. They requested an "A1 and utility", and "multi-track" operator. A1 and utility makes me think 1st AC, while multi-track operator sounds like a sound thing. This sounds to me like some sort of union classification that I'm not really familiar with, does anyone know what they might be asking for?

Production: "We have some issues to take care tomorrow. We have some sound issues. There are no doors, nosey birds, and a big high ceiling and a noisy 6th street. Patty wanted me to give you the heads up! thank you" Me: "The afternoon before the shoot is a good time to bring up possible sound issues. I'll do what I can to get the best sound possible under the circumstances." Awaiting reply........
