Last week I worked on a reality show shoot picking a contest winner Upon receiving the schedule and call sheet I noticed the job of "transportographer" listed so on I inquired to the producer as to what this job was. He explained that they felt they could combine each of the talent van drivers with the behind the scenes photographers. His reasoning was that nothing worth being photographed happened while everyone was in the van and that paying a van driver to wait around was un needed all his colleagues loved it and wish they had thought of it . So they hired two recent college grads from a photo programs and thus created the new job title transportographer. Look for it …

This might be a long shot, I'm visiting some family friends in Pittsburgh and just drove by what looks like a sizeable film set. Anyone know the shoot/production mixer? I think they are on 5th ave in the Squirrel Hill area. -greg-

Relocation hassles afflict line producers Expense reimbursements lowered, leases not signed By PETER CARANICAS Relocation costs are hitting below-the-liners forced to work outside L.A. on pics such as the New Mexico-shot "Cowboys and Aliens." As studios tighten budgets and shoot more films outside of Los Angeles in pursuit of tax incentives, some line producers are being hit hard by relocation issues and new costs as they travel to follow the productions. In some cases the routine coverage of housing costs is a thing of the past. "It's more common now for companies to give you a flat relocation allowance," said a UPM who's based in New Orleans. "A regular …

Things in my market the south east have gone very quiet with very little work the last 8 weeks ( 3 days to be exact). I was just curious how everyone else is doing this year? Bookings up down or the same? Last year was a ok year but not a great one and just getting concerned that things are going to get worse again before they get any better. Do you think things are going to get worse or get better sooner?

Of course everyone is knocking TC in this part (some of the meaner comments talk about "midget rock", etc.) but I think it looks pretty amazing. from some magazine site: "The first look at Tom Cruise as womanizing rocker Stacee Jaxx in Adam Shankman’s big-screen adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical Rock of Ages has hit the Web on Tom Cruise . com The ’80s are in full effect with a backlit, shirtless Cruise sporting long hair for the character, who, in the stage show, sings Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” and is a part of other numbers including “I Wanna Know What Love Is.” "

For you fellow oldsters who are union members: where are you guys at about various retirement issues esp re the union? My Local (16) has changed the rules for early retirement effective Jan1, making it MUCH less attractive to retire before 65 (the pension plan is in trouble, so many changes, also incl higher percentages taken from both employers and employees also start Jan 1). Are other locals having similar issues? Around here there are a lot of Boomers heading for the exit over this new situation..... phil p

My father challenged the last election held by the Camera Local 600 where he was declared ineligible to accept a nomination to the National Executive Board (NEB). The Department of Labor, after an extensive investigation, required that Local 600 re-run the election. The incumbent officers, leaders and staff at the Union immediately initiated a smear campaign, putting up obstacles to the normal and lawful communications afforded those running for office in the Union. My father had to communicate to the membership on his own, not so much as to campaign for his election, but to inform the membership what had been going down. Below is a copy of the letter he sent out to the f…

Though this could well tie in with "Who I Am Today," I thought sharing a little bit of the behind-the-scenes-and-life with other soundies could eventually create an even more interpersonal relationship on the set and online presence. Some would find this a little too informative or personal, but I want to share something that's going to affect the way I and others look at things in life and work. Especially hearing many folks who have undergone surgery for a hernia disc replacement, chemotherapy, cancer, and other life-threatening health issues and still continue on their work after treatment makes it 10x more respected among their peers. Not many people know your cond…

A producer I have worked with before wanted me to cut my rate to do some "Simple Sit down Interviews" and she also wanted to feed audio to 5D and not run double system. I told her no to both and this is the email I got today. Remind me to never again do an interview without you there. I just uploaded the footage from yesterday and it's totally unusable. God knows what the camera op did, he said he knew what he was doing, but the audio sounds like the people are 100 miles away and we're in a wind tunnel. It was this wealthy couple who totally rearranged they're schedule to do this for me. I'm mortified. Anyway - just want you to know I've always appreciated your …

Today is the last shooting day of season eleven and there's every indication that there'll be a twelfth. I have nothing philosophical to impart, I just want to express my gratitude for what has approximated a real job over the last eleven years and to let my contemporaries know that I am not complacent or overly burned out. The show rarely goes over twelve hours and while some think that even this is too much, within the existing parameters of our industry this is a welcome rarity. There is much that could be improved and while I accept this fact, I reflect on friends that work in the corporate world and that don't have anywhere near the perks of my job. I roll into work…

I'm so enjoying Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf on the the TCM channel. They have a 24 hour tribute to Elizabeth Taylor. This classic film has amazing photography, by Haskell Wexler. Based on the Edward Albee play, the script was written by Ernest Lehman, Directed by Mike Nichols. Production Sound was by the ever talented George R. Groves, edited by Sam O'Steen, the score by Alex North. The creme de la creme of Hollywood in 1966. Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, George Segal, Sandy Dennis. Taylor and Burton are so real, you feel like you are a fly on the wall watching, as they do constant battle in their actual relationship. It received 13 Oscar nominations and wo…

Earlier today, I posted "RIP Sidney Lumet", (http://jwsound.net/SMF/index.php?topic=8477.msg71580#msg71580). But I cannot stop thinking of all the great movies this man Directed and wrote as well. It is also sadly ironic that another New York filmmaker, Dennis Maitland, passed away last week. Dennis mixed three of Sidney's films "The Pawnbroker", "The Group", and "The Anderson Tapes". When I think of New York, I think of Sidney Lumet. Here is a fitting tribute by Pete Hammond, "A common thread in everything you will read about Lumet in the days to come will indeed be his service to writers and actors, as well as to New York City, a location he used many times i…

Sadly, Elizabeth Taylor, one of Hollywood's iconic actresses died today at age 79. Taylor was a legend and was THE super-star actress of the day when I was growing up. I had a once in a lifetime experience of working with Elizabeth Taylor -- is was just one day in 1994. It was on a commercial for Taylor's launch of her perfume "White Diamonds". It was as top secret as it could be. The crew arrived at a parking lot in Hollywood and only then we were given maps to where we would shoot -- which was in Malibu. The commercial was shot by the famed fashion photographer Herb Ritts, who in that day, was almost a big a "star" as ET. Even though Elizabeth Taylor was 62 at …

Just a short note to mention that I awoke this morning to the news of the tragedy in Christchurch, NZ. My immediate thought was of our friend Mike Westgate. I mailed him immediately, and he is safe and OK (he is, of course, based in Aukland, North Island). What a week of world events!! Kindest regards to all, simon b

Am I the only one doing this? Instead of futzing around breaking down the Deva, comtek, wirelesses and a mini mixer to go and sit in the front with the driver, I had our friendly yet constantly ribbing grips load my whole cart on the insert car. No fuss, zero hold up and I had everything at my disposal that I would have on a non moving location. They secured me in with some speed rail and ratchet straps and other than some wind issues with my antennas, it went very smoothly. We rarely have insert car work but whenever it's called for in the future that's the way I'm doing it.

Just curious if any other folks have days like this. Took on a small job, two day shoot, pilot for a reality show. Involves a small business, it’s owner and 3 employes. Very customer focused , with a diversity of very interesting customers from all over the world buying items or having a very specialized serviced provided for them. Anyway , producer / camera op #1 arrives with his 2 Cannons ( black cameras that shoot HD have XLR ins , no TC ) Pops them up on tripods, one is to be static and he is going to move around with camera 2 on tripod. I try and find a place to set up, place is small, wire up owner and 2 of the staff, test all mics, run snake to 1 camera, al…
