Starting new project. I was just informed that video going to be all wireless. Systems that i have not worked with before. Either HPvideo or Microlite. 5.8ghz systems. HPvideo claims 1ms latency and Microlite claims 120ms. Anybody here have real world experience with these systems? 120 ms- seems like enough to warrant a delay. thanks! john

So there was an Epic thread in the Equipment category, but it seemed to wander off course... and we have this fancy Camera section! I have a few questions... How loud is the fan with the latest firmware? It's Fall here, the shoot will be in a house that has heat, but probably will be fairly cool. The story takes place in winter, and the cast will be wearing winter clothing (NE USA Winter, not LA Winter ) So the TC input really is a 4-pin Lemo... Is that something I can get made by a usual suspect? I don't think the camera department has any kind of adapter. I want to go BNC->Epic (feeding TC from an SB-3 to the camera) I was told they have, or w…

Guys, i did a search and could not find info on this. I have a shoot coming up and we are doing double system. 788/CL8 sending a scratch track via Comtek to Red scarlett ( proper line to mic cable ). Also there is going to be a Denecke SB3 on the Red Jamsynced from my 788. The question: THey want to shoot at 24fps. What framerate do i set the 788 and SB3 at? Called Red and when i ask them they say that there 24fps setting is a true 24fps not a fake one using 23.98 like many other mfg. Can't get to the camera before starting the shoot. Any help please? THanks Pascal

So I'm doing a little 2-day shoot next week - F3 cam(s) - not too concerned because so far it seems they're fine with me just tethering to one... the last F3 shoot I did, I used hops (dual Lectro 401's), but had to use the internal rx batts as there was no LeMo DC port (what I'm used to having.) On this last shoot, the operator had 2 external monitors connected to this thing (what a cluster-f**k -- banging into walls... mounting arms coming loose at the most inopportune moments, etc. -- though some kudos to him are in order for kind of being able to operate that way) ...and my hops (because they were a bit of an afterthought) wound up being somewhat of a hinderance a…

I mostly do jobs where we record audio directly on camera. 2 channels from my mixer to camera and a stereo return feed so I know the audio is good. Now with the SD 552 being able to send 4 separate channels via AES, how are we supposed to monitor those 4 chanels? I mostly work with Sony XDCAM cameras, and it only lets you monitor 2 channels at the time, even thogh it can record 4. Are there other cameras that will let you monitor all channels? I was thinking about using the recorder in the SD 552 instead as a back up while recording 4 channels to camera, but it seems the built in recorder can only be routed to one of the AES pairs, so that wouldn't work either…

I have to work with the HPX2700 Panasonic I want to use the front mic input, which is a 5 pins female XLR Am I right to assume pin 1 is ground, 2 is hot Left, 3 return Left, 4 hot Right and 5 return Right ? I also want to monitor with the rear 5 pins male XLR Is this the same than above ? (1 ground, 2 hot L, 3 ret L, 4 hot R, 5 ret R) It should be, but how knows... I don't find the info on the manual, and I don't have the camera at hand. I understand this front mic input is intended for a stereo mic, but I want to use a mono camera mic on one track, and a receiver on the other, so I'm ready to make a small pigtail to accomodate my needs. Is…

The camera wars have just heated up... Cameramaker Red Claims Espionage Suit says rival cameramaker Arri benefitted from hacking By KAREN IDELSON Dec. 28, 2011, 3:07pm PT DAILY VARIETY In a saga worthy of a Hollywood thriller, allegations of email hacking and industrial espionage have surfaced in the camera industry in a lawsuit filed by digital camera maker Red against rival Arri. In the suit filed Dec. 21 in federal court in Orange County, Calif., Red accuses Arri of stealing technical details and development plans for Red cameras, giving Arri an unfair advantage. Much of Red's complaint rests on facts revealed in an August plea d…

Having just finished a few months with the lovely Alexa, I had forgotten how loud other camera systems can be. Back with the F35 with tape drives, and I am so annoyed by hearing the cameras. I am assured they are on the quietest settings, and I do hear them quiet down while rolling, but it's just so irritating. And I don't even want to start about how loud the DIT cart is. The loudest I have ever experienced. Truly shocking.

I mentioned the Panasonic Lumix GH2 in the Alexa thread, and a number of other sound people chimed in about being happy GH2 owners as well, so I thought it deserved its own thread. It says a lot to me that so many sound people are buying a camera with a sub-mini 2.5mm audio input. It was a big metal leap for me to convince myself to buy a camera with such a tiny audio input, but I'm glad I did. This camera is a lot smaller than most HDSLR's, and the video image is just as good, and in many respects, far better than even the steepest competition. The only thing that I've grown not to like is the 2x crop factor. Someday I'd love to bump up to a full-sized sensor…

Have any of you fine people tried using the composite video output from the canon eos cameras to feed monitors on your cart, if so, will doing this disable the hdmi out. I know the cameras ship with a usb to composite video (rca) output cable, so I'm hoping this works since sending HDMI over long distances (specifically over cat5) is still much more expensive than with standard deff composite.

I thought I'd share this, thanks to my friend, Clyde Bryan: "Frankly, when you're blowing up a 4-story building in a oner, you can't take any risk at all. And I think we all believe strongly that it would be a great risk to do something like that on a digital camera."-Wally Pfister, ASC Best regards, Jim

Believe it or not, the movie I am starting next week has gone back and forth on film vs. digital, and they will not make a decision until sometime next week. So, my question to all those who have worked with Alexa, I need to confirm a few things. From what I have learned so far, I should be at 48K sample rate and 23.98 tc, jam the Alexa from the main tc source (my Deva) and shoot tc slates. I imagine that I could jam a sync box (Denecke, Ambient, etc.) and put that on the camera. There is no plan to put any sound on the camera. Let me know if I have this all in the ballpark.

You may find this interesting. From the 'Retro Thing' website. "The Kameradatenbank features a fantastic collection of movie camera photos from six German library and museum collections. Twenty four different film formats are represented, ranging from Regular 8mm through massive 60 mm cine monsters." There is a link dwon the page to the actual data bank.

Hiya guys n gals! I've been following the development of the Aaton Penelope Delta, a 35 mm film camera. Why? Well, it's going to get a digital mag. That means it's a hybrid! It goes from film to digital and vice versa. EDIT: It would seem they've rethought the camera and just made it into one single digital camera. :/ Sad IMHO. Would've been cool to have that ability. Can't have everything I guess. Interesting camera anyhow! BUT: Another really interesting thing is that Aaton also makes the great recorder Cantar-X, and I've read in the Penelope manual that there could be some sort of link between or something like that.. Anyway it should (hopefully) mean…

This is our first new forum section in many years. The hope is that this categorization will provide a place for discussions specifically about the cameras we all work with. Not restricted to the RED camera (though I am sure discussions of that particular camera and all its variations will continue for some time).

So everyone is listing off high end cine cameras, thought I would share my excitement for a "lil" camera on the other end of the spectrum, not so much for professional use, but something I'm looking forward to myself... kiddie home movies, vacation snapshots, and some enthusiasts photo opportunities... The Sony NEX-7 is an APS-C sized miniature interchangeable lens DSLR-like performer. 24MP sensor (too much I think) seems to have good dynamic range and ok noise at normal ISO settings limited lenses, but lots of adapters available. One of the e mount lens options looks like an "OK" performing 24mm f1.8 Zeiss branded prime. Has an electronic viewfinder! Ass…
