Here's a little article I wrote for postPerspective.com (view from a computer to use the flash widget) with a flash widget about the different aspects of sound design. Would love to know your thoughts, and also how I could improve it. http://postperspective.com/subtle-sounds-diary-sound-designer/

Hi folks. Would love anyone's 2 cents concerning how long do you reckon the Omni will be supported and what may come along to replace it? I'm really contemplating going HD Native and it would suit my I/O needs fine, but it's been out there for a good while. Thanks!

Ok, so I'm not an editor and i don't want to be one. I'm 3 weeks in to a 3.5 week show and suddenly there's a flurry of emails from post telling me that all my tracks are distorted and overmodulated. We check the files here, playing back through my machine and also playing back DIT files and dailies. Result?? Zero defect and the highest level appears to peak at roughly -5db. In am recording on Zaxcom Deva V, 48k, 24bit, 23.976fps, polyphonic wav with -20db headtone. Files played back on my machine are perfect. Files sent to DIT are transcoded and exported through Davinci. Files played back from DIT are perfect. Post advises yesterday that they are usin…

What software are you using to edit audio files while retaining its scene/take/notes etc… metadata? Logic is my standard for doing audio mixing and editing and I've been a user for about 10 years, but I'd like to do some audio cleanup on some location sound files and Logic strips that info. I simply want to edit using the noise reduction, EQ, and compression plugins that I typically use, then export to a new file with the same metadata as the original file. Haven't needed it until now. Thanks.

A six-minute story on National Public Radio today: The Woman Behind The Oscar-Nominated Sound Of 'Unbroken' FEBRUARY 21, 2015 4:06 PM ET Like many of the "technical" Academy Awards, the sound editing category has long been dominated by men. But a woman was nominated this year — just the fifth woman ever in the 30 or so years the sound editing award has been a competitive contest. She's nominated for the WWII biopic Unbroken, based on the best-selling biography of Louis Zamperini, the Olympic runner and prisoner of war who turned to alcoholism after the war and eventually became a born-again Christian. (She shares the nomination with her co-e…

Hey guys, I'm a young guy who is just starting out in this industry and I am currently doing lots of free work. At the moment, I am doing everything from location recordings to the final mixes for short films. I have just finished the final mix for a short film with a client (i'm working for free), which they were very pleased and impressed with. This client is an older gent who is trying to launch his career as an actor through the submission of the short film I worked on into countless film festivals. He has many connections with very respectable and well known people in the industry, which is quite intimidating (but has the possibility of opening up the opportunit…

I was in my school studio recording a voiceover and two things are very concerning. The studio uses pro tools 11 hd. I set up a mic 416t with a converter to phantom power. First problem I encountered was that I had to boost the gain either all the way up or close to the limit in order to achieve levels that were close to -12db which caused plenty of hiss in the recording. Second problem was that on one of the recordings it sounded as if I clipped but the on the meters and even playback it didn't ever show that I clipped or that the levels got above -6db. When I went into another editing system i checked the recording and it showed I clipped. Any ideas why this would have …

Trying to sync audio with video in FCP7. Video is at 50p. Timecode on audio is at 25. When I try to merge them, it works, but only partially. Like half. I know fcp is picky with timecode and length of audio files be displayed wrong because of the different timecodes in the timeline. When I set the audio file's timecode to be 50 fps, via modify-timecode, what it does is it doubles the amount of frames within the same time frame. So what in 25 fps was TC 2:01:01:24 is now 01:01:01:49 when it should still be ending with frame 24 and continue up. Sorry if this is confusing. I'll add screenshots later. What this means is that nothing really happens. Audio in the merg…

Trying to help my brother with some post production mixing on his videos and just found out FCPX doesn't export OMF. Just curious if anyone has tried the www.x2pro.net software and how well it works between X and PT9/10. Also, is the LE version worth getting or should I jump to the Pro version at twice the price? Tried adding this question to a thread at gearslutz but my thread got moved over to a small sub-forum that doesn't get much action! Appreciate the feedback!

So the new RX is out. For RX2 users, iZotope has a pretty sweet upgrade deal, from RX2 standard was around $150? for RX3 standard and $499 for RX3 Advanced. I went the advanced route this time, mostly for the deverb function. I only had a little time to play with it before leaving for a shooting trip for the rest of the week, but the two new modules, the deverb and the realtime dialogue denoiser seem like solid tools.

"Anybody is a professional audio editor using this system." --OK, that's a bit over the top. And this idea still has a way to go before we'll see it in a product. But kinda interesting mashup of a few ideas:

Cross post from DUC - Hi All - Hoping some of the helpful folks here can help me wrap my head around an issue I'm up against. The Breakdown: Location: Working on a doc that has some unique qualities. 28 tracks of music (live performance) were recorded live - I fed a mono mix to the main camera during the shoot, I also received a mono mix of the Dx mixers tracks during the performance. Post: I was given an OMF from FCP 7 that has a stereo music guide track, with each "song" clip having been re-named by the editor (sequential numbers at the end of the file name - editor was also provided a stereo mix down of all 30 tracks to use to edit to - a…

I have a sound effect that has a metal like sound, I like to minimize that metallic sound to make sound more dull, or take away the harsher metal sounds, which audio filter would be best suited to accomplish this? This is akin to the sound http://www.pond5.com/sound-effect/8593621/boltloosenscrew-s011in59.html Thanks
