I'll post this here for our DP. I was working on a pilot TV show using 2 C300's, and all was going great.. However, on the last day of filming, the B-camera somehow got the CF cards mixed up, and long story short.. the camera department didn’t get the card dumped, and they erased the CF card. Not formatted, just erased. Some recovery tools have not really worked so far.. But a rep at Cannon, along with a DIT guy on another set, told me that it should be recoverable. Does anyone have any experience with recovering CF cards? Software suggestions? Send it out? Any help for the poor DP, would be appreciated. Thanks -Richard

The background for reference. My cousin has LONG been obsessed with writing for television and just finished film school. We're a few days into shooting for an indie t.v. show that he wrote and we're producing ourself with volunteer actors etc... Our camera man is a professional photog/videographer and REALLY knows what he's doing. He uses DSLR so we're recording audio to a Zoom H4N via one boomed shotgun mic (even on indoor dialogue scenes!) to one channel and that's it. I used to do a fair bit of music recording of just myself and my wife singing as well as playing guitar and know a little about editing and just how recording in general works. I am far from under…

Q. How can you tell when a Producer is lying? A. Their lips are moving. Q. What is the difference between a D.O.P and God? A. God does not think he is a D.O.P. Q. What is the difference between a Gaffer and a Grip? A. A Gaffer removes the dishes from the sink before he pisses in it. Q. Why do Soundies never help move anything on set? A. They can't count beyond 1, 2 - 1, 2 check 1, 2. ha ha ha (everyone lifts on 3) yeah funny huh!

Noisy Shirt !

On a recent short I mixed, I encountered an issue I 've never came across before. The lead actress main costume ( a tight white work shirt ) was noisy in a very awkward way. The whole shirt was noisy but didn't produce a crackling or fuzzy noise like some shirts do. The noise was exactly like rubbing clothes on a lav and that's why it took many many attempts to realize that its actually the shirt it self and nothing to do with my mounting techniques. I tried every possible mounting option that a COS-11 offers. Dracula clip, RM11, Make up sponge, moleskin tape, mount the RM11 on the lip of an under shirt, remove the undershirt and apply all the techniques me…

I will soon start a TV shoot where interviews take place in a car, with the participants in one car and the the technical crew placed in another car following just behind. My question is: Will a dipole antenna improve reception performance from my UCR 411?

Hello everyone I have been asked to teach a class of MA Film students in March about recording good sound for their projects. I was going to use some examples from big feature films (something they would know) do any of you have examples of both good and bad dialog. (Just to be clear when I say bad I don't mean in a sense that someone has done something wrong but more in a sense that it was a bad location ect , so maybe something with noticeable ADR. Don't want to cause offense) Regards Chris W

Greetings ! I have recently started using a Sennheiser g3 wireless system for recording Lav mic's into a SD 664. I wanted to ask others here what settings are working best for them as I'm not 100% satisfied with the quality of signal I'm getting. I currently set sensitivity to just over half the range on the transmitter (in case the talent talks louder than in the sound check) and making sure I don't see the AF Peak light at all. Then on the receiver I have the AF Out settings at 0 (with the idea that I'm not adding or attenuating the gain on the sennheiser) Then I'm coming into the 664 at Mic level and have my Gain Trim at 12.00 (half of the range) …

Hello all, last month I worked a gig, a big event some would say, and everything was great. the producers were super cool, the camera guy was great, the office people I talked to beforehand were also nice to deal with. I filled out all kinds of paperwork, which I sent them within hours of receiving, blah blah blah. Anyway, on my invoice the terms were Net 30 and today is day 30 and you guessed it, no check. I emailed them on August 1st and they responded with "Your check goes out this week." I know the mail is slow but not this slow. I have never had an invoice go unpaid so I'm not sure what to do other than send an email asking what's up. Should I charge a late f…

So in the football stadium sequence, Bane is seen holding an SM style Lectrosonics transmitter clutched in his hand, as he announces the fate of the crowd's crippling future. Without knowing what it is, most viewers would blow it off so... Blooper or Intentional?

I saw this today, looking for images of my old but loved sennheiser, trying to identify the model number and came across this image. Just for the recorded it looks like a stick of dynamite. XLR on one end and 6ft+ thin cable on the other connected to the lav mic. If you know this mic let me know. http://www.leewhitephotography.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/wireless_open1.jpg The author is claiming that the looping eliminates noise created from the cord when it moves. Just wondering if this is true?

This post is in direct response to 'Sign the Petition' by Jeff Wexler. I didn't want to hijack that thread, but the comments by industry vets sparked a few thoughts and I'd like your input. John et al, I agree with you 100%. However, it brings to mind a couple of questions and even more points that I've been pondering for a while: 1.) How do seasoned pros like you all get this message to younger sound mixers? 2.) And furthermore, should you bother? 3.) Is there a disconnect between what we expect new mixers to do, and the information with which we empower them to actually do it? I think the answers are: 1.) I don't know, and 2.) Yes, it w…

I've tried all of the good tips to get the tape goo off my lav wires with varying degrees of success. Using chemicals such as lighter fluid, goo gone, denatured alcohol all have the drawback of making the residue soft and spreading it around on the cable. You get it all eventually but it can leave the cable somewhat sticky. I also worry about the effect it might have on the cable jacket over time and multiple cleanings. I remembered reading about using an eraser on tape goo, tried it and it really works well. I'm using a soft eraser that you put over the existing eraser of a pencil. The eraser rubs the dried transpore adhesive right off and doesn't make it gooey. …

I was watching the other day Citizen Kane (1941) by the great Orson Welles and was really impressed by the ....well...the entire thing!....but since we are into the "sound" side of things...well you know.... I am not knowledgeable enough to expand on how they did it, but was wondering if someone here mind to explain some of the techniques that were used to capture sound. Here below is what's on wikipedia....very informative indeed. It also shows, to some extend, how much more in consideration sound was for the entire production. To the point of all departments collaborating with each other....something that might sound obvious in the "film-making" world but unf…

no one here has brought this up, so U'll stick my feet into my mouth, once again, since both Daily Variety and The Hollywood reporter mentioned the same thing. THR: " You can't keep them (the characters) all straight, and a muddy soundtrack doesn't help. Depp had his own sound technician, according to the end credits, but you still can't hear him. Between mumbled lines and busy music cues, much of the film's dialogue is indistinct. " DV: " it is Mann's way to deliberately pare connective tissue, a strategy magnified here by the unintelligibility of a fair amount of dialogue... Much attention is paid to the quality of the gunshots, the sounds really pop, " I have not …

What's with guys that are afraid to boom? When they boom it's more like a pointer than running full stick over head. I'm on a show now that the lead audio (should be A2) barely booms, when he does he might as well just be using the pistol grip. Trust me, production knows it, he won't be back for second season, I will. Meanwhile I'm over talents head on a 9' stick. He will never put both arms up in the air, boom is always at an angle. Me, I boom with both arms straight up. Reality and multi-track has created some lazy bastards!!! I black list these guys but WTF?

I need a lightweight program/app for OSX and PC that will play our .wav files with stamped timecode. Apparently quicktime pro shows timecode, but only for videos. Any one know of a piece of software to play TC encoded .WAVs? FCP does but that software is not easy to come by for free. I need it simply for reporter/producer types who want to listen to track and create simple EDL from audio file.

I'm at a very loud concert hanging out next to the sound board, and they've got a monitor that actively displays the room dB level. It's regularly going over 100, as high as 102.5. Very bassy music with phat hip hop bass blasts. You know the kind, the bass just rattles your entire rib cage, tickles your nuts, and makes your t shirt flap against your arms and stomach. I put in earplugs over the HN cans (with new pads) because just earplugs isn't enough. Of course using two levels of hearing protection makes a big difference in the high and mid freqs, but it seems to increase the bass; or rather, just turn everything I hear into bass freqs. Which is very "uncomf…

For Discussion: I have been asked at one of the schools I teach at to keep a class focused on students using (ony) DCsP to do their post sound on their projects, rather than any different programs (PT, PT-LE, or even Audacity!). SoundTrack, maybe! so, while I am familiar with PT and acquainted with both FCsP and Soundtrack, I'd be interested in other opinions on this, and possibly specific capabilities, instances, and examples of this being a good -or not so good- idea yes, I'm looking for ammunition for an upcoming meeting. The argument I've been given is that the students already have and use FCsP for their projects, and adding another program, even a free one li…

Hey guys, I'm re watching all the Star Trek TNG episodes (my friend got the DVD box set), and I'm wondering if anybody knows anything about the location audio on that show? What mics? Did they use lavs? Etc. A lot of the shots sound distant (suggesting boom) but sometimes I just don't see how you could get in there and boom it with the low ceilings. Also found a picture of a fisher boom on set: Anything info would be great!

Does anyone on JWSound, from outside the USA, use any of the 'USA Postal Address' services? I mean this sort of thing Here in Australia, the prices for audio products are a very high percentage more than in the USA. And some retailers, as you know, will only ship to a USA address. For example, I just ordered some Mogami 2930 from the US. In Australia it's close to $14/metre. In the US it's around $4.12/metre. Anything over about 12 - 15 metres and it's worth the shipping from the US. So for the 50 metres I ordered, it's a no-brainer. Does anyone have experience with any of the services? And before you say it Senator, yes I know that 'someone' has expe…

Hey y'all! Wanted to share something that I came up with (I'm sure I'm not the first to do this) this week. I'm a mixer in Idaho, and generally I don't really get requests for IFB/listen in etc, but every now and then it'll come up that a client would like to listen in on a scene or shot. Now, seeing how rare these requests are, and that not having it has never lost me work, I've never felt the need to drop $1-2k on a full IFB set (Comtek and the like). So instead I decided to do what you see below. Coming out of my 633, is an XLRF to 3.5mm. Then I have a Female to Female 3.5mm barrel connector. Then that connects to a 5 way headphone splitter. Going off that I have …

Backup recorder? 1 2 3 4
by Jeff Wexler- 81 replies

Bear with me on this. The question goes out to all those running a second recorder concurrently in production where one recorder is considered the primary recorder and the other a backup. I am not interested in stories from the DAT days or when two recorders are being used to facilitate different format/media or copies for deliverables. What two recorders are you using and what incidents or circumstances have you had to go to the backup recording on a job? I know I probably could have put up a POLL (if I knew how) which would have been easier, but I like the free form answers from those who are willing to write. - Jeff Wexler
