I have a fellow freelance sound colleague in my area that came up with a really cool device I sure wish I had thought of. Next best thing... I bought four of 'em... What is it? Well, as the name suggests, uh, its a battery clip, much like an ammo clip, that holds either 9 volts or AA's. At the price of these units their usefulness becomes rather obvious, if for no other reason than keeping people out of your battery stash on set. It doesn't burst open all over the ground when dropped, like the cardboard box batteries are supplied in. Finally, if you need to keep batteries warm on your body, this is a perfect solution. Not to endorse a particular vendor, but ther…

After recording for the past 4 days on my 744t, I just transferred all the files to a drive. After I pulled the FW cable from the computer and tried to power it down for the night, I got the screen that says powering down, closing media, however, it hadn't shut down. After I pulled the battery, restarted it, and tried to power it down again, the same thing happened. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so, what should I do? Before someone gets on my back about contacting the manufacturer, it's Friday night at 12:20 AM in San Juan, Puerto Rico and I could really use a cold beer right about now. Thanks in advance for your collective help. Marc

We had a good and informative discussion on another tipic lately about battery chargers (Maha-Powerex) and right now at Newegg.ca (hello Canajuns!), they're having a very good rebate for 3 days ont the MH-C9000 charger + 2700 mAH batteries. For those who might be interested... ;-) LinK: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817355014

so this past week i was relying on my 3-4 channels to record audio from a shotgun i placed onto the camera....48 phantom was on, all the settings were right!....i see levels on the camera, so i let my operator take off to cover a simple ambient scene. once that one tape was in the hands of post...there was no audio on the tape.. do you think its because the record settings took the 3-4 channels off the disk? ive also enclosed the sony pdw-700 audio manual below... audio recording MPEG HD422: 4 ch/24 bits/48 kHz MPEG HD: 4 ch/16 bits/48 kHz MPEG IMX: (4ch, 16-bit or 24-bit, 48 kHz) DVCAM: 4 ch/16 bits/48 kHz record/playback MPEG HD422: 50 …

I'm going to be recording a large group of performers, in a large hall soon. The performance will be filmed very wide, so I can't hang mics in front of, or even that close to the performance. I am looking to get a good stereo image of the hall reverberation, and a reasonably well balanced and direct sound from the group performance. To accomplish this I am considering using a M/S recording with a long gun shotgun as the mid mic, but I've never used a long gun as the mid mic in a M/S set up. I will probably accompany this with several lavs spread throughout the performance, but I don't want to rely on the lavs, and am looking for a more even and balanced image of the…

Hey guys, Sorry to sound cheap and I know that porta brace makes high quality products but I really rather not spend $200 on a bag. I would much rather spend that extra money on gear!! I'm using a SD 702 and am looking for something under $100. I guess that I could just look for a random bag that fits but I'm wondering if there's something specifically tailored to audio? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

so i was working a football game this past weekend, freezing my ass off none the less, and i noticed most of the mixers working that game were rocking earbuds of some sort. snugly tucked up inside their warmly laden ears under toboggans and hoods. granted its not going to be as good as closed, over the ear style headphones but i'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions for some higher end earbuds to use for under toboggan/hood scenario.

I am considering looping through my UMCWB into my Wideband Venue. A ALP620 > A Venue In < A Venue Out < A UMCWB In B ALP620 > B Venue In < B Venue Out < B UMCWB In If it works, I've just added 4 more wireless to my system, which is a positive or negative depending on who you ask Has anyone had any real world experience with this setup? From my garage, it worked ok, having my friend roam the street with a UM400 transmitter on his belt, as I watched the meters from my cart. Signal drop out came a little earlier than I would have hoped, but it could have been the frequency I was using on his transmitter. The other kicker is that I am…

Just a quick question to those of you having used many different mics in the field! I do occasional production sound recording and a lot of sound fx recording so I am looking to upgrade my microphones. I will be getting one good all-rounder shotgun mic and a stereo pair. So my question was regarding the shotgun mic. If you could only get one shotgun for production sound/fx recording which would you go for? My current options are: Sennheiser MKH60 Sennheiser MKH416 (would like to know how this mic compares to the MKH60! Other than the presence peak are there any other major differences? Neumann KMR81 Schoeps CMIT Any feedback on these would be great! …

Anyone after running their battery to exhaustion? I'm just wondering how often users replace the internal battery that drives the time code unit. I have no issues with mine but I'd hate for it to go wrong on location so I've been thinking about when it would be best to replace it. Cheers, Damien

Looking for a good single sided headphone for camera operator use. Would love a single sided sony 7506 but not sure this is available. I see Beyer makes some. Need one without a boom mic. Thanks!

So, my laptop (an ancient iBook G3) is on its last legs. I mostly use it for web and email, so I was thinking about replacing it with an iPad. However, I've also been using the laptop for playback gigs (using Audacity), and the iPad's built-in music player app doesn't really seem like an adequate replacement. Does anyone know of a third-party app that would do the trick? My Google-fu seems to be failing me here.

Hi all, Ive had this stereo link for about one day and am having trouble recording. Im using a Kensington 8gb card which can be formatted and can be used for updating software. After being formatted the unit records for about 15 seconds before flashing FULL and stopping. It sill indicates that there are 49 hours recording time left. The manual instructs SanDisk cards. Before i go buying new cards...does anyone know of any size limits? is 8 or 16 gb ok? Thanks for any help... Dave

I'm about to begin a "do it myself" project and I need to locate about 6 of those small toggle switches that are either so VERY short that it almost impossible to bump them, or a toggle switch that has those little "cup" protectors around them that are not uncommon to this business. Can anyone suggest a sourse for these switches? I've tried and tried different searches and just can't seem to find them. Thanks, Tom

Apologies in advance as I'm sure this topic has been covered here, but I can't seem to find it. I picked up a Sennheiser buttplug transmitter the other day, just cause. I tried testing it in a variety of applications, handheld plug on, on the boom, and then out of a MM-1 (quickly discovered the unit functions pretty uselessly as a pre). So far I've found the range to just plain suck. I suppose the intended application is a hand held to a camera that's 5 feet away. The whole mic-as-an-antennae thing seems like a pretty soft science as it is, so I'm a bit befuddled as to improve range. Do the things just suck? And I ask in terms of G2 performance, which is what it is. …

He guys, here is a message to Larry F. or anyone that can comfirm this for me. I use a battery sled for my SRa camera hop sometimes. I need to swap my old battery ( lmount copies from china ) and want to see what kind of runtime i would get. If i go from the equation: Runtime in Hours= Ah / A draw Then a Sony Infolitium 2200mah battery used in a SRa receiver drawing around 200ma then: 11 hours = 2.2ah ( 2200mah ) / 0.2a ( 200ma ) Using the battery at 80% that would give me 8.8 hours ( 11hours at 80% = 8.8 hours ). So 11 hours from that battery? In the past i had 4-5 hours from my 2200mah copy china battery. Will i get this runtime? THa…

Hey Guys, I've been using the 416 as my goto shotgun for as long as I've been doing sound. I've tried others, and the closest I've found to something I might like better is the blue Schoeps. Since I'm not able to buy new mics for a while, I'm still stickin with my 2 416's. Even if i could afford it, I'm not sure I'd replace the 416's. I've always had issues with shockmounts for it, though. The 416 is very front heavy and sits crooked in many shockmounts that hold other mics just fine. The area that the shockmount's bands can cover is also very small compared to other mics. My goto mounts have always been the PSC ones with the orange bands. They're small, …

Hi All, I am currently being tempted by a second hand 744T as an upgrade to my 552. I would need to see the 552 to generate the necessary cash. My question is, how easy is it to mix on those small pots I see on the 744T ? And also, why do I only see 2 pots? How is gain/trim for channels 3&4 controlled? Many thanks, B

Howdy. Heading to Atlanta to record 4 people on 2 cams. I didnt want to mix down the 4 lavs to 2 channels, and all I have is a 552, so I brought in another sound person w another 552 for cam2. I figure I'll run 2 mics (1-l & 1-r) through each 552, and send mic 1&2 to a cam 1&2 and mic 1&2 to b cam 3&4. Then send mic 3&4 to a cam 3&4, and mic 3&4 to bcam 1&2. Does this make sense? Tring to get all 4 mics iso'd on each.cam. Also. Using pana 2700's- do I need to futz the menu to get agc off when using 3&4 audio in? I'll moni 1&2 audio in, but I haven't ever input into 3&4; any ankle biters there? Thanks jcc
