Woodland Studio B, 1982 - Commercial I took a 17 piece group to this room with an old Neve - I told the assistant what we had coming in and when he asked how I wanted the room setup - I asked him how long he had worked there’d he said 3 years - ‘then you know your room and what works, help me impress this producer and we will all gain a client”. The only thing I requested was all large cap german mics - all day tracking I kept looking at the producer trying not to grin at each other - Neve’s forever https://mixdownmag.com.au/features/rupert-neve-exploring-the-audio-architects-everlasting-legacy/

Sad to read about the passing of Rupert Neve today. The soundtrack to mine, and many others lives were recorded and mixed on a Neve. While not too popular with us I always loved hearing from the handful of Mixers who did used them on a cart. Seemed so exotic!

Mark Capps showing us how he puts a mix together. The studio is The Sound Shop in Nashville, which was bulldozed a few years ago to make room for condo's. The console is a Trident Vector. Good stuff starts around :50 and is over by 4:00. I know nothing about the project or Larry Cappetto.

Chat feature will be disabled as I work on installing something which I think will work better. Thank you for your patience. I installed the Chatbox on this site many months ago but it has gotten ZERO use by any of our members. I'm not even sure it is displayed in the navigation area on the main page. Is there anyone who wants to see if it is working (and more importantly I would like to hear if this is a feature anybody will want to use). Below you will see a screenshot that shows the button in the header for the Chatbox.

Quite often sound is the most under-appreciated aspect of filmmaking even though photography and sound are the two most important tools in cinematic storytelling. This is a workshop for those who want to explore the technical knowledge and set procedures required of professional sound recordists and mixers in a wide range of field productions. It will be equally attentive to craft and theory. Led by Oscar-Winning Production Sound Mixer Mark Ulano, the workshop covers the preparation, necessary equipment, processes and techniques for recording and mixing sound in the field. Students learn to appreciate the protocols common to all TV and movies, the importance…

I was tempted to add this to the Gallery of Sound Carts. But I bet someone else already has. (ht to Jason DeGraw who posted this on Facebook). Everything old is new again.

I thought this article on The TANK Center for Sonic Arts was fascinating, inspiring, and encouraging. A Water Tank Turned Music Venue In Colorado, a uniquely resonant performance space. New Yorker By Alex Ross In 1976, the composer and sound artist Bruce Odland participated in an arts festival sponsored by the Colorado Chautauqua, which presented shows across the state. Odland’s contribution was to create a sonic collage portraying each place he visited. The last stop was a town called Rangely, in northwestern Colorado, on the high desert that extends into Utah. Odland was outside one day, making recordings of ambient sounds, when a …

Once the world decided dumbing it down to MP3's seamlessly I was shocked! Now I can't help thinking how many jobs will be lost to "Home Interviews" with a cell phone links... FOREVER! The people who run TV and Radio stations dont care about audio quality. it is a number game to them. And right now the numbers are high! If they can eliminate and Audio Engineer from the process welll... People have accepted a HUGE dumbing down to mp3's and did not care, what is in store for us? Yikes! JP

A week or so ago I updated the core software that runs this site --- everything went smoothly, there have been quite a few changes "under the hood" as they say, performance improvements and stability. Like so many other updates, there were consequences unforeseen --- the long running theme and customizations got corrupted and there were some incompatibilities. What you have been seeing the last few days is the result of cobbling together a theme that works while I have been doing a total redesign of the site. Quite soon I will be changing everyone over to the new theme. Anyone experiencing any difficulties, please let me know using the Contact Us form, a Private Messa…

So sad to read the news today that Chad Boseman has died. He was a wonderful person, a really good actor and such a dedicated hard worker. I did "42", the Jackie Robinson movie with him, he was in just about every scene and every day working with him was a pleasure.

Got an email from the UPM stating that they are starting some construction this month, and are working to start shooting n August. WHAAAAAAAT?!!! I always maintained that schools would be open before network shows started up again. But they’re not... Seems overly hopeful to me. I’ve heard about reality starting back up in my town, but August seems just crazy. With virus numbers going up due to a Deranged Cheeto who’s only “leadership” is calling for a civil war and all... So sad to hear of the passing of Alan Parker. One of the greatest directors, though I never got the chance to work with him, his films and his filmmaking inspired me greatly, helped sustain my love of the craft of filmmaking.

What are your thoughts on these proposals? Personally, I'm not a fan of "French Hours" because I feel it gets abused and all departments end up with different length meal-breaks. But I sure as heck wish a 40hr work week was a living wage for all crew members and I'm sure we all have had stress due to lack of at-home time with family, friends, and significant others. https://www.currentaffairs.org/2020/07/its-time-for-a-new-labor-movement-in-the-performing-arts?fbclid=IwAR0HliXHnBYwAvAVLdnx-j2Zpb0ryCQpdoA75Q_lKaJnPzVNiK85GJcsV3M
