Curious if anyone has done as i am not sure how much time i will have to experiment. Its for a 360 tour in a noisy environment and i will have to rig up and go. Considering double lav, one traditional hidden at chest and one hidden in top foam of shield and allowing prod to go with best of the 2. Anyone with any personal experience and pitfalls i should watch for?

I've always wondered what microphone and recorder they used in Star Trek the original series. The dialogue is so nice and thick, even on a wide 4 person shot where the boom would have to be high because of the nearly square TV frame. You hardly hear any noise too. Really clean. This quality was common on TV shows of the mid 60s, "Hogan's Heroes" also had great sound. Does anybody know what sound gear was used in Star Trek? Thanks

I just read the following, "Modern telephony sends your voice using encoded phonemes, adjustment coefficients and corrections for a virtual voicebox which tries to mimic you at the other end. Actual raw audio is not sent. This is also the reason why hold music can sound pretty weird sometimes." Does anyone know if this is true?

Hello, I did a quick search and didn't find any posts talking about joining the union so I'm sorry if this is a repeat question. I'm a non-union sound mixer in Los Angeles and I was wondering if anyone had advice on how to eventually get union work. I've been able to scrape by the last 4 years as a full time freelance artist but now I'm worried that the non-union sets I'm working on are going to be unsafe with new covid safety protocols. I've worked a couple skeleton crews (3 crew members, 2 cast) recently which didn't feel unsafe but we also were not close to following the new covid safety protocols. I'm worried larger non-union sets are also going to not going to b…

I'm a camera operator who is building a small sound package for personal projects and I'm trying to find a belt worn adapter that would feed headphones and xlr out to the mixer for a two man crew. I've always seen a small box on the boom operator's waist that headphones would be fed from and the boom's xlr out would feed to . I'm searching all the pro sound rental purchase sites and for the life of me I can't locate such an item. What the heck is it called? ( it just occurred to me some boom operators probably just have on a set of comteks...but I'm learning here) Thanks Brian Culver City California

I was curious about it, found this article, and was thoroughly entertained! They can regenerate scilia and receptors! https://www.geoexpro.com/articles/2011/03/marine-seismic-sources-part-viii-fish-hear-a-great-deal Here’s a quote: ”Fish do not need an outer or middle ear, since the role of these structures in terrestrial vertebrates is to funnel sound to the ear and overcome the impedance difference between air and the fluids of the inner ear. Since fish live in water, and have the same density as water, there is no impedance difference to overcome. Fish do have an inner ear which is similar in structure and function to the inner ear of …

I have an upcoming shoot on Santa Catalina Island off SoCal coast. Anyone with experience shooting there? Any frequency ranges totally off the table? Not sure if there are any large antennas located atop the island or marine radios that can cause some trouble. Thanks!

Apparently, The COVID has claimed 3 of my NP-1 batteries. Weird. I have never had a NP-1 die, they just last less and less time. When I put the batteries in the JL-2 charger, the indicator turns red, then flashes yellow. I have 2 chargers and both do the same thing. I measure with a meter and they are completely dead. Yes, they sat in the 95° garage for 2 months, but that's nothing new. Thoughts? Ritter Battery here I come...

Would you say having certain brand names in your kit list increase the chances of you getting hired? Or to ask the question a different way, are there certain sound kit brand names that non-technical production people recognise over others? For eample: lets say theres someone who works in a production company whose job it is to hire sound crew. They may have heard the name Lectrosonics and associate it with competent sound crew but they may not have come across the names of other wireless brands so often. Would you say the chances of getting hired be less if you had non-Lectro kit? Same with other brands like sound devices etc.

Having a bit of an issue with past client of mine and curious if this has happened to anyone else and how they've handled it, or any tips on how to resolve the situation. Since most of my work has been for the production company I work for regularly and I've only started freelancing for real the past year I haven't had a contract for any of my freelance gigs. I just went in with blind faith that they would pay me, or I wouldn't deliver the audio (most times I'm just emailing it over after the shoot, no DIT or anything on these small gigs). I've learned my lesson from that blind faith though, did a shoot back in November for a documentary in the area and I still haven't be…

I need help finding a recorder to use with one XLR mic (mic TBD). I’d like the recorder to output to a digital camera. I will be filming wildlife using remote motion activated cameras and would like high quality sound for my videos. The recorder will be sitting in the woods with a camera or cameras in a waterproof case for weeks at a time. I'm good with electronics so modifying recorders/programming devices to turn on a recorder and record when I want would not be an issue. I need a recorder this is either: 1) Able to sit on standby/sleep at very lower power ready to record in an instant (once recording it can use a lot of power as long as it doesn't during st…

I know one can easily find online recordings/samples made with the Zoom H2n but still I´d like to ask here: does anyone have any unprocessed, 24bit/48khz (or 96khz) quiet to medium busy ambience recordings done with this portable recorder? I have been thinking of buying one ever since it came out and even though it is not such a big investment I would still like to be sure if it has the minimum quality to be usable in film. I do not want to carry my 788T + Stereo Mic rig around everywhere to record ambience. If anyone has any 10 second or so snippets of an audio recording they feel is a good example of the H2N´s capabilities, I`d be thankful if they could post a d…

Hi I am looking at purchasing a mic to plug into my iphone for recording gongs, handpan and crystal bowls etc. Would the Shure mid-side be better than the Rode iXY? Websites below... Does anyone know if Films are still "Bonded" In other words is there an Insurance Policy taken out on a Production to cover the Investors if the film can not be completed? Do studios (like Netflix) self Insure. I know Actors need to have Physicals before they start shooting and are Insured by some companies. In the Insurance Industry there is a person called an Actuary who analysis the risk taken by an Insurance policy. Anybody know anyone in the Film Insurance business who has heard if this is still happening for films? Or is it all about just following the Virus Guidelines and we all go back to work?

I’m helping out some friends that have a worship space - They recently converted the big rear room into a yoga studio / devotional music space which gets loud - There used to be a big shrine type arrangement blocking the rear windows but that has moved and the neighbours are complaining. we need to build some plugs to go into the 2 large window cavities. They can be 200mm deep ( not ideal ) but this also will make them more manageable. The plan is 3 plugs - 1200mm wide by 1200 high that fit in each window space . I’m looking for advice on the composition Currently looking at ( with materials to hand ) From inside room to window. 18mm ply to 70mm Audex fo…

I have a question that I can’t find the answer to anywhere. I have searched high and low and there is nothing out there so I joined this forum in an effort to get advice from folks who would seem to have knowledge in this area. I do videos where I drive in my car and record the drive. I am trying to drive every street in my area and capture it on video. People who used to live in this area love these videos because it brings back memories for them. Here is my question. When I shoot a driving video I delete the audio in post and replace it with music. The ambient audio is always horrible due to wind noise and driving has constant wind. I would like to record ambi…

I am doing a movie in a couple of months and with a good chunk taking place on a "stage" that is much more like a warehouse with some flats in it. During the "how is sound" discussion with the director and producer I pitched the usual fury-pads, carpets, curtains. I also, not thinking it would go anywhere, pitched that we could bring the booms in frame on the wides and have VFX paint them out and to my surprise production called VFX and he said "we are able to do that." I have never had the pleasure of doing this on a longer narrative production (done it a couple of times on commercials and with green screens) and wanted to hear from some people who about the…

Hi guys, I run my own small production company and am currently in the process of launching a new online satirical news show. Small budget, but we already own fairly decent equipment. In terms of sound I own a Sennheiser radio 500 G4 kit with MKE2 gold lav. I also own a 416 and MKH50. I'm currently using the MKH50 attached to a mic stand to record the audio of our presenter. The room sounds a bit reflective - its a small studio built in a small living room with low ceilings, so its hard to avoid the echo (I'm hanging sound blankets wherever possible and getting the mic close without it being in shot). How can I get that rich, loud soun…

I received some really helpful feedback from my previous post but had a few follow up questions I was hoping to get advice on. To recap: I’m filming outdoors with remotely triggered cameras but need professional quality audio. The camera will be housed in a waterproof Pelican case, triggered to record on motion, and there will be hundreds of clips every week. The simplest way to include audio with the video would be to record the sound on the camera because syncing up the sounds for hundreds of clips a week would add significant time and complexity so I’d like to avoid that path if I can record at the same or similar audio quality. Unfortunately t…

Doing some research on Wireless Designer, I'm interested in using it to help coordinate my freq's and scan the area. However, I don't have any compatible Lectro gear currently (No DSDQ or Venue, just some SRc's). I was curious if anyone has any experience connecting it with a third party scanner, such as an RF Explorer? I did read on Lectro's website it can accept data from various devices, but I'm assuming that means I have to conduct a scan then import the data, I'm hoping there is a way to do the scan inside WD real time.
