16 foot Fisher Boom Pole

I saw this on the Coffee site and wondered: would anyone ever use this now? It's really only a 16 footer which my large poles handle just fine. What sort of projects might this be useful for? Has anyone on the group had experience with this equipment? Would you need your own union (read IA) dolly grip to move it around during setup or shots? How flexible would it be for a moving (or multiple) target? http://www.coffeysound.com/product.php?productid=753&cat=122&page=1 Just killin time.... Eric Lamontagne

This was touched on in the Rastorder sound cart thread and I want to explore it more. I currently have my laptop mounted on a Ram Tough Tray. http://65.102.174.116/rammount/productdetail.aspx?partnumber=RAM-234-3&searchTerm=ram2343&item=1 It has four mounting holes on the bottom, which I attached a plate, then a 5/8" receiver. A little more hardware and there you go...it's on the cart. The only problem is that it's a fixed mount. I have to remove it for travel and storage. I'd love a swing arm style with locking whatever... Let's see some laptop mounts that folks are using on their carts. Show and tell time... Thanks, ~PWP

Okay, I'm not intending this to be an oogle thread, but it just happens to be a picture that's easy on the eyes. First, there is a wireless pack there, even if you can't see it It looks like either a zaxcom or a sennheiser to me, but not owning either, I can't tell. Your thoughts? Also, the pack holder is pretty snazzy! Do you think it's a custom job? Tom

I saw some RF freq. analyzer pkgs for laptops for WiFI freqs. They were cool small units that plugged into a USB port. What I would love would be a similar kind of thing in the UHF bands we use, w/ software. I'm not sure how accurate it would have to be as long as the display made some kind of sense. The hardware analyzers I've seen are really too expensive for me, and I have to have the laptop along on location anyhow. Is there any such thing, and if not could this product be something that Lectro or Zax could be persuaded to make? Or is there a decent relatively inexpensive handheld analyzer that covers UHF that I've missed? Philip Perkins

I am going to work on a post sound for a film that was recorded on location with a DV824 on to DVD-RAM discs. What are the options & process for me transferring the audio to a computer? I do not have a DVD-RAM Drive, I have MAC G4 & MAC G5.

I'm looking at adding a short shotgun to my collection. Right now I have a couple Schoeps CMC 5's with MK41, MK4, and MK2 capsules, as well as a Senn MKH70 when the Schoeps get fritzy in the foggy SF night exteriors. Can anyone report about the CMIT 5u in humid environments? Does it suffer the same frailties of the CMC mics? Or is it a viable competitor for the dependability of an MKH60? (I'll also be curious how the DPA shotgun will fare in humid conditions) Jeff, you and Don have a CMIT in your bevy of mics, no? Thanks for any insights and experiences. Brian Copenhagen

Hey Everbody, I've got an old Anvil Case (slightly bigger and deeper than a briefcase) that I bought at a yard sale several years back. I'd like to use it again but the foam that was inside it pretty much disintegrated. I've pulled most of it out, but there is still some glue left on the wood and small foam pellets. Anyone have an idea how I can get the rest of this junk out? David

I am considering buying a Yamaha 01V96 and have a couple of questions about it. 1. Is anyone here using the 01V96 with Boom Recorder and if so, are you using the internal Yamaha mLAN internal Firewire interface card? 2. Rumor has it that someone is doing a conversion that allows you to run the 01V96 from external 12 VDC batteries? If so, do you know who is doing this mod and how much does it cost?

Anyone had any experience with Voice Technology mics? I'm interested in hearing about any thoughts, opinions, or experiences you've had with any of their models. How are they for hiding under clothing, durability, sound quality etc. Thanks! Bernie

hello, Just wondering what you guys use as far a pouches for your comteks go. Tried the standard clips that come with the 216 but a few drops later some of th comteks cracks on the body, tried the pouch with the plastic clip, hard to find and the clips only lasts a few jobs, love the pouch though, tried the bigger pouch with the belt loop through, but no belt clip, and that is it scriptys rarely have belts on it seams, also the flap covers the headphone jack and putts pressure on it. I know that the 72 had a pouch that had no flap and a metal "clip" is the a similar thing for the 216??? any suggestions?

Does this new release indicate the Mac Mini may live a little longer? http://www.apple.com/macmini/ BTW if one scrolls about half way down the page to the "Big Ideas" section there are links to mods and interesting uses of the Mini. Maybe a user here will post an unusual sound app. (I haven't incorporated a Mini on my cart yet.)

Does anyone know of a block battery usable directly w/ a Mac laptop? That would mean 24 VDC, right? It seems like it ought to be possible, but haven't seen anything suitable. I'm referring to a "movie style" battery built into a Pelican etc, maybe with a charger etc.. Philip Perkins

I may buy a new Mac laptop, so thought I'd use my old iBook for playback. Is there an inexpensive and easy software for playback that allows multiple cue points or "hot keys" to play different short clips at the touch of a specific key? Thanks, Robert

Hi there, are you using your Zaxcom TRX 900 with rechargeable NiMH (1.2V) batteries? It says in the manual its best to do so. But even with fresh loaded ones I only get half way on the trx display (the receiver rack unit says T9 so - fully loaded) and second: what is in your experience a proper level on the trx? I can`t see when the limiter is kicking in (its ON) so I don`t know if I`m wasting too much headroom for safety. I would gess somewhere between -20 and zero should be fine?! Thanks for your thoughts and help, Matthias

Anyone using Tascam's HDP2 recorder should get the new software update from the Tascam site. Here's a quote: Maintenance • Previously, the HD-P2 would incorrectly continue its transport motion when receiving still frame time code. This has been corrected in 1.05. • Previously, the HD-P2 would not re-chase according to the setting of Auto Trigger when receiving moving time code after receiving still frame time code. This has been corrected in 1.05. • The Scan Media function, which is part of the Windows CE operating system used by the HD-P2, has been found unreliable in rare cases. To avoid data corruption by Scan Media, this function has been removed. …

All, I was at Fry's last weekend (I spend way too much time and money at Fry's) and saw they have the acomdata 160GB FW and USB small drives on sale for $99. I have the 120GB version of this drive and have used it very successfully with Boom Recorder in a mirrored setup. The reason I like this drive is first, the price, second, there aren't many small format FW drives out there any more (almost all of the newer ones are USB only), this drive is bus powered and finally it is 5400 RPM. I seem to be getting quite a bit of low frequency handling noise with all of my mics. Schoeps CMC641, MKH50, 416, MKH60, in rycote softie mounts, Ktek KGPS, KSSM mount. Poles are cabled Ktek, and my mixer is a 442. As an ENG guy I'm always moving and handling the pole a lot and I just cant seem to reduce the handling noise. Any suggestions?

Is anyone familiar with these guys? Looks to be pretty much the same as listen or Comtek systems, but I just came across them in a Full Compass catalog. http://www.williamssound.com/productdetail.aspx?product_id=210 Tom

Is anyone using the Batteries4Broadcast Li-ion NP-1s? It looks like two of these and a Comer Charger would be quite a bit less than one of the idx starter packages. I'm currently using a Sony BC-1WA and a couple NP-1 Ni-Cads that are about gone. Searching around the net I found this (only Ni-MH) but I would be scared to try and carry that on a plane - looks kind of suspect. I talked with Ty Ford the other day and he uses something similar to the battery pack (for laptop/portable dvd players) I think ATS is offering. I'd really like to stay with NP-1s though so I could also use them in my 8044Q monitor. David

Hey all, In San Francisco at the moment doing a reality build show and we need to rent some 2 ways with ear pieces for Tuesday 21st August. We are doing a shoot in Union Square, right in the thick of it, will be madness... The last place we used seemed quite pricey. We probably need up to 6 two way radios with ear pieces. Anyone know a place in San Francisco Bay Area that rents these? Thanks for any help! Jason

There seems to be a lot of interest in using the Rugged Drive from LaCie. For me it seems like a lot of hype and I don't like the colors. In any case, there have been some difficulties using this drive with the Deva and Mark Weingarten on the Deva group seems to have found a fix. I have pretty much gone off LaCie for a lot of reasons, but I thought this might be of interest. "I have found an OSX software update at Lacie that allows the Deva V to mount the Rugged Drive. Download the link below. Unplug all other periferals from your computer. Plug in the Rugged Drive and launch the updater. Allow it to update the Rugged Drive. That's it! Done! My Deva V is now mou…

I just picked up a new Loon 10' pole. It's actually a demo, but I'm going to take it up to this next AK shoot for a good tromp through the bush. Stand by for comments and photos. We'll be up there for about a month. The show is called Expedition: Alaska. 3 units, 2 shows. Shooting on Pan HDX900s + all the widgets and trick cam stuff. So far: A-Stars, Float Planes, Microlight, Heli-gimble, Dive Boat, Sea Kayaks, River Rafts & Kayaks, Skis, Ice climbing, etc., etc. And for sound? Top-shelf kits. Details to follow upon return. And if you can even believe it, they don't even want M/S, much less 5.1. For FREE. But, I never go into the bush without at least my M/S…
