I received this today. This is a major league bummer. Those rooms are irreplaceable. Dear all, We are sad to inform you that the Berkeley building at 2600 Tenth Street in which we operate is being sold, and that Fantasy Recording Studios will be closing effective September 15th, 2018. We wish to thank you for your patronage and for the privilege of working with you on the incredible projects you have completed at Fantasy. We are grateful and proud that your works of art will represent us forever. Our wonderful staff engineers and producers have freelance relationships with other studios and production spaces, and would lov…

I owe Burt Reynolds big time. I was changing my career focus from music recording to production sound when he brought BL Stryker to Florida in the late 80's. I worked 12 - 2 hour movies with him that turned out to be my location sound grad school. A gentle man, I never heard him yell unless it was in the script. Thank you Burt.

Long ago and far way there were no internets to learn from. We had magazines, Recording Engineer/Producer, Mix, and Studio Sound. I was rooting around and found this Studio Sound article about LSI Recording in Nashville, the studio I spent years and a marriage working in. I've been trying to post it here but my files were too large. I mentioned this on Jan's Sounderday this morning and John B. found the issue online. A time capsule of sound recording 1984 with my 15 seconds of fame starting on p 38. https://www.americanradiohistory.com/Archive-Studio-Sound/80s/Studio-Sound-1984-09.pdf .

Obviously I have no affiliation with them, but I am just surprised. On August 3rd they announced that Chris Wolf (Rycote) has joined Rode. And I have just learned that they purchased FuzzMeasure, a pretty nice and affordable audio measurement application for Mac OS X. They also bought Soundfield I think. Seems they are on their way to a real expansion from consumer to prosumer to professional? Rather different from Samsung acquiring the Harman Group, firing, it seems, most of the AKG engineers and selling "Samsung by AKG" headphones. Ewwww.

I wonder whether people might have thoughts to share on the following? Today I got a call from a producer who needs to hire a "Sound Operator." to team up with their "Director of Photography". I've never previously been asked to be a sound operator. A couple of years ago, I was disqualified from a National Emmy Award nomination because the credit on the project was "Sound Recordist". Their board did not recognize this title, which I had not requested but the producer had insisted on using. The Emmy award department required a protest letter from the producer to let the nomination stand (which I recall the producer was reluctant to do --presumably their o…

The forerunner of Volkswagen's electric lineup, the I.D. R is all about balance. With 680 horsepower and a weight of just under 2425 lbs., it's not the most powerful Pikes Peak special, nor the lightest. But Volkswagen knew that the torque delivery of the electric motors and the mechanical grip provided by all-wheel drive and purpose-built Michelin tires would give a huge advantage. Aerodynamics played a major part, too, considering how thin the air becomes as a car climbs the 12.42-mile course. The solution is a flat-bottom streamlined chassis with a huge rear wing, shaped by data gathered from Porsche's LMP1 program. Pikes Peak. The 96th International Hillclimb sin…

The studio I worked at went through divorce and the new owner was an RCA Nashville producer and Chet Atkins would sometimes show up to listen to what we were working on. The most he ever said to me "Al could to roll back to the turnaround ( instrumental break), there might be a lick there I could steal" He liked to laugh. https://reverb.com/news/certified-genius-the-guitars-of-chet-atkins

As much as I do NOT like the "Like" button on Facebook (I have yet to ever click on the like button), I have added a Like Button to JWSOUND. Everyone should be able to see it in the lower right hand corner of every post. Clicking on it will establish a "Like" for that post but how that is registered and tracked, how it actually functions, is unknown to me. The button is grey until hovered and clicked on.

Peripheral to our concerns. But interesting (<-- note the extremely ambiguous and arguably neutral word choice): Behringer tried to sue Dave Smith Instruments, forum posters Peter Kirn - June 19, 2018 In addition to sending a cease-and-desist letter to a popular Chinese music gear site, court filings reveal Behringer tried to sue rival manufacturer Dave Smith Instruments – and unnamed GearSlutz users. And they lost. We’re seeing the tail end of those filings now, as Dave Smith Instruments file to recover their six-figure legal costs from MUSIC GROUP, in effect for MUSIC GROUP having filed what the courts found to be a lawsuit wi…

Rycote Announcement: May 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Gozzard, who died at his home on 4th May 2018. John founded Rycote and, whilst his name might not be familiar to many, the company he started (named after his house, “Rylands Cottage”) is recognised the world over by everyone associated with location sound. John was passionate about sound and was a film recordist in the early 1970s, working for ATV and the BBC. At that time, newly emerging practical microphones, that were exactly what sound recordists wanted, were hampered by the heavy, cumbersome microphone suspensions and windshields available, which were typically m…

Hey everyone, Today I was doing a walk and talk down a narrow hallway where it would have been really tough to get a good consistent placement with the boom so we rigged it up to the dolly and it seemed to work pretty well. The talent was speaking direct to camera so his distance from the camera didn’t change much. (I know the schoeps cmc641 would have been a better choice than the 416 but it was a last minute shoot so I didn’t have access to it so quickly) We also wanted consistent light on him so we rigged up a 4x frame and a rolly stand to the dolly as well. Just curious if this is typical of walk and talks if you have a dolly…
