DPA slim cable getting stiff and brakes

The new 6060 cable could be an improvement, I was shown one the other day, it was the first thing I noticed, definitely a softer feel than any of my 4060's, 4063, and slim, when they were new. Lets hope DPA have taken notice of many people experiencing hardening cables, and this is a new formulation that addresses the issue......

    Schoeps MiniCMIT or DPA 4017b

No I've not heard of a side by side B to C comparison, it would be nice to have an idea of the quantity of 'softer' though I would expect it to be fairly neglible? from the DPA website https://www.dpamicrophones.com/accessories/mmp-c-compact-microphone-preamplifier "Ultra-compact preamplifier with active drive for impedance balancing. It has a slightly softer character than the other preamps in the d:dicate™ Microphones Series."

    What is your spare recorder

Zoom F8n backup for a Nomad, because it will do the job, it's just small enough, has proper timecode, and I use it as a supplementary recorder anyway, as I have twice now in the last couple of months for continuous timecoded music performance desk feed and as a lightweight option for when it's just one radio and a boom etc. I've bought two more TX's for it for the camera hop, to speed up changeover. I've been very happy with the F8n for the money, I don't want a whole other Nomad anyway.

New Zoom H3-VR Recorder mic combo..

SoundField by RØDE Plugin is claiming - Having the ability to change the polar pattern of the virtual microphones in post-production is a well know feature of ambisonics – allowing the user to create everything from omni through cardioid to fig-8 patterns in post-production. The new SoundField by RØDE goes beyond this, for the first-time allowing shotgun-type patterns to be created, using recent developments in beamforming technology. Plug in download however not available yet, as of 17th September 2018 https://en.rode.com/soundfieldplugin#footer_download https://en.rode.com/soundfieldplugin#overview

New Zoom H3-VR Recorder mic combo..

Yes very good points, to add to which if ambisonic is listened to in a fairly accurate 3d surround environment, with height included, the brain is able to make more sense of it, and do it's own filtering (in a 'you are there' sort of way) using phase relationships and timing information, which the brain is very, very finely tuned to be able to discriminate and filter, as the result of life that has evolved and prospered over millions of years, from aquatic, to animals to humans are those able to derive better detailed selective information from their enviroment for both survival and food. Listening to Ambisonic in anything other than a very good surround space is effectively stripping a lot of information which the brain uses to do it's amazing filtering all the time. New Zoom H3-VR Recorder mic combo..

Some interesting design ideas but I'd be more inclined to believe it might have value in some circumstances, if it didn't have that nasty old fashioned blocky, low res, monochromatic, LCD screen uugh! Makes it look cheap, is that a great design decision? Leads one to wonder what other decisions have been made along similar lines. Would it have been worth it to put a hi-res colour OLED on it, raise the price a little, and perhaps made it look much more the part, for the future?

Neil Young talks about analog vs. digital

BWAV TC is stamped samples since midnight and Pro Tools places on the timeline in samples since midnight, so in the case of Pro Tools it works perfectly accurately. Totally consistent yes. PS. Zaxcom unlike SD which attempts to cut at frame joins ie. TC 00 frames and failed, on this occasion, with a 4 sample gap, whereas Zaxcom cuts and restarts at any samples since midnight value, rather than SD's 00 frames, but Zaxcoms file joins are nevertheless sample accurate.

Neil Young talks about analog vs. digital

Screen grab showing Pro Tools 4 sample gap when consecutive files spotted to the timeline by timecode. Memory locations on gap samples, to make missing samples clear. The end of the previous file is 3858768000 samples and the start of the following file is 3858768004 samples, a 4 sample discrepancy.

Zooming in to the max in Pro Tools, it's easy to see and measure samples, and I was curious about the accuracy. Interestingly both Zaxcom Nomad, and Zoom F8 file joins are sample accurate.

Neil Young talks about analog vs. digital

Interesting. I was outraged to find 4 sample gaps in SD 633 recordings at the 2Gb file divisions, (between the preceeding file to the supposedly continuous next file) but was amazed to discover that try as I might, I couldn't hear 4 sample gaps when playing back the music. (approx 1/480th of a film frame, or 1/12000th of a second) It was an ambisonic recording of David Bowie's Lazarus. So that proved something to me, haha, try it yourself? I did report it to Sound Devices......

MKH40 outdoor - rycote baseball vs babyball

Eh! If wind can get to the capsule through the switch apertures quite clearly, then so too will sound even more clearly, now whether that is fairly negligible is one thing, but it will have an effect. And as we all know with these top end mics the difference is subtle and each one has a signature, I wouldn't mind betting that switch aperture has a definite effect on the subtle signature of the MKH 50.....

    Zoom F8n.

Ha yes my F8 is the spare, but I was still nervous that it could have the white screen issue as the information about which machines it might affect was vague. Ok I don't know how many F8's it did affect, but because it was a random at any time kind of thing, every time used it I wondered whether it would go white screen, and it did make me nervous, but glad to hear the issue seems to have gone away.....

    Zoom F8n.

Yes good point or possibly a bigger internal power supply so the FRC-8 can be bus powered? Yes good point about the power draw. I don't care about any customer service when a machine suddenly refuses to work on location, it has the potential to lose me money every minute of down time, and that makes me nervous even if the customer service is the best in the world, it shouldn't be happening in the first place, and Zoom were very coy about which serial numbers it might affect, possibly because they were unsure themselves, they could have issued a mass recall, but didn't?
  21. pindrop

    Zoom F8n.

Of course yes, but I quickly sold my F8 and bought an F8n, then they updated the F8 firmware!! But I hated that XLR's couldn't go line level on the F8, as it meant more clutter and just in case cables. The headphone amp is supposedly better, maybe that's why the F8n weighs 40g more? And +4 output on main outs is much more useful to me than mic level. And that niggling worry about the white screen of death, hopefully they've fixed that too?......:)
  22. pindrop

    Zoom F8n.

Eh no, the F8n main out is +4 or -10 and sub out is -10 or -40 as listed in the comparison chart you yourself posted a link to. I'm using F8n main out at -10 myself to G3's and it works fine..... Think you might have got confused? I've implemented an F8n as a lightweight option for when I don't need my full on Nomad with 6 receivers and FP8, as a quick swap out with camera hops on the same frequency, I love it and once I got my head round how to name folders and scenes,on the F8n, it's a beatiful thing, love the simple implementation of MS headphone monitoring, faders as trims.....etc. Never liked the Maxx with one card, and no Zaxnet anyway. Now if I can just find a nicely priced used QRX 235 on the right block I can implement Zaxnet on the F8n without too much expense too......:)
  23. Script makes a huge difference, if it's resolutely a two hander that's one thing, if there's multiple scenes with multiple characters, solo sound would likely have been a total head banger, and they'd likely have no hesitation trampling you........ Probably best off out of it......
