An interview w/ Tom Hidley who revolutionized audio control rooms with his Westlake Audio design, with the support of Record Plant founders Gary Kelgren and Chris Stone. A Westlake Audio room in LA would be synonymous with a Westlake room in London or Shanghai. A 2015 conversation between audio trailblazer Tom Hidley and Record Plant co-founder Chris Stone (moderated by Steve Harvey). Tom Hidley: You can’t really talk about Record Plant unless you talk about two main individuals. The first being Gary Kellgren, who was the visionary behind the package, and Chris Stone, who actually made it happen financially, following budget…

Rycote Announcement: May 2018 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Gozzard, who died at his home on 4th May 2018. John founded Rycote and, whilst his name might not be familiar to many, the company he started (named after his house, “Rylands Cottage”) is recognised the world over by everyone associated with location sound. John was passionate about sound and was a film recordist in the early 1970s, working for ATV and the BBC. At that time, newly emerging practical microphones, that were exactly what sound recordists wanted, were hampered by the heavy, cumbersome microphone suspensions and windshields available, which were typically m…

As many of you already know, my dear friend and fellow worker, Don Coufal, is battling cancer. Don and I have worked together for 40 years, 67 movies,I owe so much of the success of my long career to Don's amazing and creative approach to the work and his total dedication to the job —- we were a pretty incredible team! Never wanting to be the person who needs help, at this time now, Don needs our help. Don's wonderful daughters, Emma and Libby, have set up a GoFundMe account to raise some money for Don during this time that he is unable to work. Don is managing to fight the good fight and has the same positive attitude and commitment I have known through all the years we …

Hey everyone, Today I was doing a walk and talk down a narrow hallway where it would have been really tough to get a good consistent placement with the boom so we rigged it up to the dolly and it seemed to work pretty well. The talent was speaking direct to camera so his distance from the camera didn’t change much. (I know the schoeps cmc641 would have been a better choice than the 416 but it was a last minute shoot so I didn’t have access to it so quickly) We also wanted consistent light on him so we rigged up a 4x frame and a rolly stand to the dolly as well. Just curious if this is typical of walk and talks if you have a dolly…

I have an serious issue with my R88, it doesn't play back recorded audio files: - I can see the files in the root folder. - I can see their size, length and I can scroll into them, but they do not play back from the unit. - The play button does not light up when I hit play. - Do not see any levels coming up on recorded tracks. - The files will playback via USB out to a computer. - Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks

Hello LA and NYC brothers and sisters there's a rumor going around out in here in the rain starved desert about the IA signing off on some sort of 14 hour day rule. Is this for 600 only or is it another overly optimistic hearsay. Is it April already? Cheers and good luck for a prosperous year.

A moment of hopeful prayer for my man Elon Musk, who today is going to try to pull off one of the best publicity stunts in history. As you may know, he plans to launch his new “heavy” rocket, 2nd in power only to the Saturn 5 in a test config today. Its payload: Elon’s red Tesla sports car--like a car that he had been driving. It’s rigged to play “Space Oddity” on a loop, and escape earth’s orbit for that of Mars. Where it will orbit for about a billion years. Finally, a space shot that interests me....

Re-posting from LA Sound Mixer's post: "The LA Sound Mixers is mourning the passing of master sound cart builder, Chinhda Khommarath who passed away in his home yesterday. Chinhda's ideas and craftsmanship set a benchmark for sound cart builders everywhere. He will be missed by many." Almost everyone knows of Chinhda from his amazing carts --- fewer knew the man, just as amazing as his creations. Truly elevated the importance of the sound cart.

Music is important to me. There are some songs and songwriters that go right to my heart. They can fill me with light on very dark days. Curtis Mayfield is one of those artists, and People Get Ready (1965) is one of those songs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_Mayfield I usually stay w/ the original versions of hit records but for this I found a live performance on youtube to better show his guitar playing. Curtis always had his own sound and it was largely due to the tuning he used which was a F# open tuning, not one you see often. It is also the black keys on a piano and for a self taught musicia…

Hey all, Does anyone have an accountant in the NYC area that they would recommend? I have one that I've used for the past couple of years and haven't been totally satisfied, so I'd love to look around a bit. If anyone has someone that they use and like and who understands our business I would love to hear about it! I am incorporated as an S-corp, if that matters. Thanks! -Mike

Fascinating article in today's NYT about neural networks generating still images of faces with no 'uncanny valley'. But buried in that article is reference to work at University of Washington last Summer... that automatically edits lips to match a different track! Literally puts new words in someone's mouth. On a computer screen, sync looks absolutely realistic. Resolution might not be enough for a big screen... but these things tend to leap forward quickly. Here's a link just to the UW demo. They took some real Obama speeches, and put them into multiple other Obama faces. Same speech, many different visual deliveries. The article doesn't men…
