Recently purchased a Schoeps CMC141 and Rycote Nano Shield AA and I’ve noticed that when I put the windshield on (sock only, no windjammer) it picks up a lot of boom pole handling noise. Buts, as soon as I take the windshield off, the noise is gone. It sounds like the windshield creates a low mid resonance that pulls up the resonance traveling through the PSC boom pole. I love the mount, it’s amazingly engineered, but this resonance thing has me stumped. Is this normal for small zeppelins to exhibit a resonance? Any tips to minimize / eliminate? I have noticed that the further back I put the mic in the basket, the less prominent the effect, but it’s still pretty noticeabl…

Hi, I put in a CF card in my 633 mixer, it was a Transcend 32G (older) card that has never been used on the mixer. And before I could even navigate to format, it froze the mixer, the screen is on, but won't react to buttons etc. I removed power and took out AAs and turned off, and the screen is still on! Any recommendations on what to do? I'm surprised how long the screen has been lit up with no batteries...

Hi, I have been using a PSC RF multi (distro function on, amplifier function off) with the Diversity fin (dipole & sharkfin combo, non-powered) for several years with mostly flawless results. However i'm on a job now where one of the 6 wireless is play is giving me frequent drop outs due to the perfect combo of that talent being just far enough with the transmitter on their back, with their body directly in line between the raised antenna and the transmitter. There was no way to adjust it on the fly today (and the problem was minor enough), but I'm planning on fixing it before we go tomorrow and butting up against my knowledge of antenna distribution / s…

Hello! I’m new to Nagra iv-s and I‘m collecting information on how to get the most out of this lovely machine. Currently, I put it into mastering (and also making some copies for fun). As you can see, for these purposes, the timecode is redundant. I have read the instruction manual and got to know that there's risk that the timecode could invading the audio tracks. Furthermore, there're comments that the S/N rate could be a little higher without the timecode. SO, I'm wondering if there's a LEGAL WAY to turn off the timecode generator of this machine. I know from a comment in another topic on this forum that: According to the sea…

Has anyone used the Kortwich Preamp 6? This is the 6 channel version of their add-on for Sound Devices 6xx machines like 664. I recall some discussion of these some time ago, but don't recall if anyone thought they were a decent match, or as good as the onboard SD preamps?

"If I were to do it all again today, I'd go with something other than Lectro (...Sound Devices A-10, Shure Axient, Wisycom, Sony DWX...), but alas, I bought-in so long ago and now I'm stuck..." I've heard this sentiment a bunch lately, in forums and in conversation with mixers more experienced than myself. As someone who's just starting to build (currently dreaming of / saving-up for) my wireless kit from scratch, I'd love to know what wireless ecosystem(s) would you go with if you were building your kit anew today, and why? Note: So far I've built my kit from 98% used gear, and I've expected that's just the way it's going to have to be, at least f…

Hi all, I’m looking to make a new cable from my RX12 AES out to Deva 24 for the MRX414 modules. What 4 core + shield /2 pair cable are you using to fit into the Ta5 connectors? I’d rather do this than 2 separate cables. Thanks

So I am in the process of testing out some gear to upgrade my kit. Some of the tests we did over the weekend actually surprised us and was curious about other peoples experience with the A20s or even thoughts of the Zaxcom. I currently run a Sound Devices 688 with 400 series Lectros. Over the last week we have been testing out the SD A20 RX and A20 Tx and A10 Tx, plus the Zaxcom MRX414 with the RX4 Interface and the ZMT4s. The plan is to eventually change the mixer out to a 888 or a Zaxcom Nova, depending on the route we go with the receivers. We were surprised while testing the A20 in several different powers and modulation modes, that the range was lacking com…

Hi. I'm looking for Nagra iii parts - notably the strap nuts and spool holders. Wondering if you guys might have an idea of where (or how) I might obtain domestically? I'd rather not buy from eBay because the only guy selling what I need is international, a bit overpriced, and doesn't respond to my messages. I don't need authentic Nagra parts - just something that works. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thx.

Hi, does anyone have a comparison in battery consumption Sound devices 888 vs 688? I'm used to two 98Wh batteries being enough for the 688 per day. Looking at the specs, I get the impression that the 888 eats once that much, is that right? Thank you

Hi everyone! I am new to the forums and am blown away by the wealth of knowledge on this site. Is sound your hobby, passion, or job? What would you recommend to a student trying to dip their toes into the massive field of sound? Any great books that you dig? I have been reading Audio In the Media and it has been illuminating. ☺️ What does your kit look like for documentary work? What has been your best investment? I am slowly trying to build out a kit and currently only have the UWP-D21 receiver/transmitter and a TR50 (which sounds a little low?). I have a Sanken CSS-5 on the way second hand from a friend but don’t know wh…

Just thought some here - if not already aware - might like to hear about Rycote's new mics (following up on their two shotgun mics introduced last autumn), courtesy of Simon Clark's brief intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-qxcn_c-Sss Having had three of the shotgun mics for the last year, I'm currently testing the supercardioid and cardioid models and, hopefully, the omni next week, so will post a link to test/review (with wav files) in due course. Impressed so far. Now, if there was to be a fig 8 too...! Cheers, Roland

Wondering if any of you are using the Bubblebee Spacer Wind Protector? I've had it a few years and find it extremely effective. Reasonably priced and comes in many sizes and colors. There is a size for any size shotgun. I leave the shield (minus the fur) on my cMIT 5u all the time. Not only does protect the shotgun mic, it does not muffle room sound. B&H has the windshield listed as a special order for $150 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1282623-REG/bubblebee_industries_bbi_sb_m_mesh_spacer_wind_protector.html/reviews Let me know your thoughts- Leo Diane Pearlman, All Most You Patrick Toole, Speak What We Fee…

Hey everyone! I am new to the game, so forgive me if this seems obvious. Is the 552 unpractical and dated as a stand-alone mixer/recorder if I can get my hands on one for $600? and I am deliberating over whether or not the sd552 would make sense or if I should get the the mixpre 6 ii or the zoom f8n pro. Which one will have a better shelf life for expansion as a student such as myself. On a separate note. I have acquired a ktek Avalon graphite traveler that is cabled with a 3pin xlr, however, I have a sanken css-5 shotgun mic that runs a 5pin. I was thinking about picking up the Rycote cyclone and windjammer, but figured I would ask you all what solu…

Hey Guys, I'm finding my rig weighs a ton! Clocking in around 7kg.... my back has been killing me this week, so I've just ordered the Ktek Kshrn3 stingray harness. I'm curious, how much do your bags weigh? Is mine just silly heavy? Any pointers for keeping bag weight down? Thanks!

I recently picked up a G4 EK/ES 100 combo (A1) and I'm wondering if it would be worth it to modify their antennae with SMA whips... Would the improvement in range/signal be notable or negligible with only 30mW max RF output? I mostly rent my wireless (and love lectro's). I'll keep on saving up for my own! Sincere thanks, John

Hi everyone, I'm considering to upgrade my A10RX to an A20RX. The cost for having the the unit upgraded is not cheap, at all. I use my A10RX mainly in the bag with A10 TX and betso bowtie direclty connected to it. Using the A20 with the A10TX, I will "only" benefit of the added band pass filer and probably a better or longer firmware updating path. I'd like to know the experience of someone who has already upgraded his unit/s or someone who uses both and can compare the performance of the two receivers. An antenna distributor with a tunable filter costs and weights more, but can be used with more receivers, and of different brands, even if most ne…

Hi, all, I have a Sound Devices 833 running 9.0.1 firmware. It has worked beautifully and flawlessly. Today I started it up and got the usual timecode modal and ignored it as always and the screen went black and all the fader lights turned off. I confirm power is getting to the box as it has batteries AND it was plugged into mains. Subsequently I have tried with just the batteries or just the power mains, no soap. Even if I could get the danged thing to start I would be hesitant to factory reset (for fear of losing all the presets I have made, plus the NA plugin) but I sure would like to force it to restart. Has anyone here had a similar issue? I have a backup…

Hello everyone, looking for some advice from the cable experts... We all know the increased RF problems around camera with all the video transmitters, WiFi, focus pulling gear etc. I use my Lectro IFB units as hops most of the time (r1b, r1c). I thought I would be clever and buy some heavily insulated cables to connect them to camera (1' Canare or Mogami with Neutriks). Then I wondered if the added insulation would be a problem as the IFB will use that cable as its antenna. Any insight? Thanks!

I recently purchased two pairs of BP-TRX microphones. I'm having a number of issues and I'm trying to determine whether there are issues with the units, or my semi-amateur operation. (I am primarily a camera person) Some background: I'm using four BP-TRX units as two pairs, connected directly to a Sony FS7. I am using Countryman B3 mics. I am using the self-recording feature on both transmitters. -Electronic noises on transmitter: I was hearing short bursts of electronic beeping, which i traced back to one of the two transmitters. These noises exist when monitoring the transmitter through the headphone port, and in the recordings on the MicroSD cards. Th…
