Just recently purchased a second hand MKH30 to pair with my existing MKH50 for stereo MS ambiences, and it seems like windshields for this set up are not a common thing for some reason. I am sure i'm not alone using (or trying to use) this set up for stereo MS in the field, so show me your set ups please I could set it up on my Rycote Nano Shield but the two mics seem too tall since the nano shield is a flat oval shaped blimp, or could purchase something new or fabricate something maybe. I also own an INV 7 suspension which could hold the two mics probably but i'd still need to find some windshield that fits two mics like that. I was hoping to have it in some b…

I asked about this repair company (guy, really) in an earlier post. I ended up driving my sick DA78 down to LA from Berkeley (on a trip for other reasons) and took it to FET in Burbank. Mark Naziry did all sorts of mods and fixes to my DA78, and it is working better than it has in years. The DTRS and other tape formats may not be much of a deal to us anymore, but for me it does still come up for archive retrieval (DAT too), so it is good to have someone around who can still make those machines work. His price was very reasonable I thought-much less than I had thought it would be. I think he works on consoles etc etc too, and I saw a lot of vintage keyboard instrument…

I recently finished shooting two feature films using Zaxcom Deva24 and had some issues with timecode that I would like to share here. The editorial department reported that in the timecode sync process of all cuts, the sound preceded the picture by an average of two frames. At first I suspected that the problem might be caused by the camera, but when two films shot with different cameras both pointed out a two-frame error, I changed my mind and did a test at a later date using only my own equipment. I tested recording Deva24 and Fusion(also made by Zaxcom) simultaneously with the timecode boxes synced, and interestingly, the result was that Deva24's …

Hello everybody. I am building a monitoring/one way communication system, pretty much stationary in a studio, except one receiver needs to be on a person who moves about the facility (The facility is not very large). The desire is of course to spend as little money as possible. Have an old, but very good sounding Lectro UM190 transmitter and CR187 receiver, fixed frequency. Need to add one or two more receivers. I found one that has a frequency different by 0.025 Mhz, it is my understanding it should work fine, but has anyone tried how wide the difference can be on those units? Thank you.

Hey guys, I have a 106+1 I want to connect to my 108+1 to increase the channel count. The manual says this can be done via the D-Sub mix bus connector on the side panel. I went to the manual to look at the wiring diagram but the images in the manual are so low res I can't make out the labels. Anyone know what the pinouts are, or have a hard copy of that manual page you are willing to upload a picture of? Thanks

Hello all! Does anyone have any recent experience with customs at Incheon Airport in Seoul, South Korea? In ten days, I'm transiting through Seoul for five days on a solo holiday before I fly to a job in Mongolia. I have an ATA carnet for Mongolia, but I'm unsure of what I might experience customs-wise at Incheon. I'll have one case of gear and a couple of personal bags. Thanks in advance! Dave

I'm looking at getting better sync devices. Just using the Zaxcom CL and RX200 is not working out for me. Hell even have had issues hardwired (FS7 and VRaptor). So both of these products offer what I need both Genelock and Time code on the same units. Looking for any experience with either or both. I'd be using my Mixpre 10 for this and sending Genlock to it via BNC and TC via the Aux port. Currently have FS7 and a RED V Raptor camera we are trying to get to work better together. Have a 2 ish frame offset now and the recorder doesn't line up with either of them. Although closer to the the FS7. They were all hardwired together …

Hello everybody, i am not a sound professional and searching for help! I am a documentary filmmaker working for cinema and TV. In recent years I startet to shoot my documentary films alone. Mainly i use 1-7 lavs now for my protagonists (Sennheiser G4). This works well in most situations. I know that this still means a certain compromise in sound quality. Now I would like to capture sound and voices more spontaneously without using lavs for all my protagonists. What might be the best microphone available to mount on my camera? At the moment I have a Sennheiser 416 mounted at the top. The microphone is not bad but there might be better solutio…

Hello there, I was on a shoot in different cities in Germany and I constantly had some kind of interference noise on the talents wire. I attached the audio. It seems that the distortion mainly occurs on higher volumes. Receiver is a Lectro DSR4 Transmitter is a Lectro SSM B1 (DPA4060) No antenna combiner involved - antennas mounted directly to the rx. Rx is connected to a 888 via AES. Distance between rx and tx was never greater than 5 meters - line of sight Compat modes are matching. The DSR4 was checked by Lectro HQ in Oktober and operates to factory standards. The issue persists on different frequencies - so…

I’m thinking on jumping on the ship of the A-20 nexus and replace my SRcs/SMWDBs. I’m wondering what transmitters to go with. I would like to have your opinion on it. now that the A20-tx is out, is it a better option overall? The A20-TX seems to have a better battery life and more functions. The mini is smaller but battery life seems to be an issue. Do people hide the A20-TX on talents without problem? Is the size comparable to a SMWDB? Thank you, Nathan

(I apologize to JW for starting a new F8 thread, but I have a specific technical question for F8 users and didn't want it buried in the thread with overall impressions and speculations about the recorder's future etc. If this is not cool I will move this thread or delete and try again there.) My question is for F8 users--have you used the F8 TC mode in which it uses incoming external TC to control its record (sample) clock? Have you used this mode over a long take (like a concert set, 1+ hr) and did sync hold with other devices? There have been other devices (that I've owned) that would do this (MOTU Traveler, Tascam HDP2 among them) and it worked very well, but i…

The Viviana Antenna Saver had me wondering what it does, since no data is published about performance; not that I blame them. There are too many variables to say what results one will get. I had some silicone tubing that was about the right size and I gave it a try. The tubing I have does not keep the antenna away as far as the Viviana item. It provided at least an 8db signal improvement. I did not notice any improvement moving the antenna further away. I experimented with the antenna distance from the skin. The signal starts to noticeably attenuate at about 3/16" from the body. So I think Viviana got it right with their product. Thumbs…

Along with others (hopefully one or two here), I have been testing the Mini-ALTO of late. For any not aware, this is the first full-basket windshield from Radius Windshields (the ex-Rycote team led by Simon Davies), and is a small windshield (with various length options) designed, in their words, for 'speed of transition between interior and exterior set up'. It will be followed by the ALTO (similar, but with a larger diameter) and the CIRRUS (larger still, but I've no idea of the form), so there will be options for more significant wind. Anyway, for anyone interested, here's my tests/thoughts: https://drbadphil.com/radius-mini-alto-windshield Hopefully, we wi…

This seems like it should be a straightforward thing to find but I’m having a bewildering search on the internet. I’ve purchased a set of Shure SE846 IEMs for field recording. They sound great but come with a quite basic consumer TRRS cable with a mic for calls and the like. I would prefer a durable TRS cable with a 1/4 inch jack on the end; however, I can’t seem to readily find what I’m looking for. There are all manner of options for MMCX cables but they all seem to be either consumer connections with TRRS or up into the stratosphere froofy audiophile sets that cost as much as the IEMs themselves. Any recommendations for just a durable cable set for professional use?

I’m changing things up on my follow cart and would love some ideas. Maybe we could get a “Gallery of Follow Carts” going to complement the original “Gallery of Sound Carts?”

Hey everyone, I post more on the Facebook audio pages but wanted to show off the products I have been designing for audio equipment. I have designed cases for lockit boxes, tx, rxs, bumpers for slates, sunshades for the Sound Devices 6 and 8 series and battery caps for smart batteries. It's been a fun process learning how to create cases for our industry.

Just checking, is VDB Audio actually operational? I'm interested in a boom; however, there is no dealer in Australia so I'm attempting to contact them directly. I filled out the query webform weeks ago with no response, started an online account on the website and submitted a quote request...no response and emailed the sales email...also no response. Doesn't bode well for follow up if I have any issues or need customer service later.

Hi, Please excuse my possibly silly question: I have here a Sonosax M2D2 and a Sony Alpha 7CII. Is there a way to connect the M2D2 digitally via the MIShoe? Are there other possibilities for digital audio integration? Greetings from Switzerland Erich

A friend's house flooded yesterday and some of his equipment got wet. In the past I have only had water problems with transmitters and I have proceeded by disassembling and immersing them in isolpropyl alcohol. And it has worked in 75% of cases (although future corrosion is uncertain). Is there any reason to believe that isopropyl alcohol can damage some equipment? I know that it damages the appearance of some plastics, but nothing more. Will it hurt LCD screens? What is certain is that you do not have to give them power. opinions?
