RF Info and the FCC Licensing Project Mission Statement In order to ensure that the concerns, needs and issues of the thousands of professional sound recordists in the United States who use the UHF spectrum on a daily basis, can be heard by the FCC, it is imperative that as many users as possible obtain a license from the FCC. The basic goals of this project are: To educate Production Sound individuals who use radio equipment in the lawful use of these devices, and to understand the privileges and responsibilities of licensed operation. To remove the liability of unlicensed operation of wireless transmitters. The FCC can levy fines of up to $11,000, per trans…

I have a project coming up where we will be shooting a really long dialogue sequence inside a cottage during night time. Unfortunately it has an old style rusty tin roof. In terms of dealing with this and potentially problems it will cause, my thought is: - Use WD40 on as many areas of the roof as possible. - Line the exterior of the roof with high density foam and ontop of that moving blankets (to absorb wind and minor rain or droplets). Is there anything else to help treat it, that I'm not thinking of?

Be careful out there, seems people are preying extra hard to try to get desperate people in on job scams. I received this one today. Funny enough, a very famous Belgian actor seems to moonlight as a recruiter at a Belgian Freight company while using an email address that was created less than a month ago... I saw a picture some time ago of some BBC radio engineers in the 1950’s; they were all wearing a kind of grey (or, of course, grey in the B&W image) lab coat suit with ties. Does anyone know if this type of suit had a particular name? It’s what you see any sort of technicians/engineering shop workers of the era wearing when one was expected to wear a suit and tie but one needed to be able to operate a lathe or safely get into a crawl space to replace a bunch of burnt out vacuum tubes.

Hello I just wanted to see if anyone knows of any good equipment repair shops. I used to take my gear to Location Sound in Los Angeles but found out that they got bought out by another company and their original location is now closed. I have some lav mic connectors that I would like replaced. Is there any good places that you could recommend?

I hope to be in the PNW capturing birds and biotones for the rest of my life, and I already have a Schoeps CMIT 5U and the respective rycote blimp/deadcat. I'm a student ecologist and want to document organic sound and then use them for advancing research. I currently have a 744t, though it would be nice to have something smaller (can't afford a mixpre 3 atm). What are your thoughts on a rycote cyclone vs og blimp? I will be using my mic every single day for a study, so, I'm trying to streamline an efficient workflow and maintain a minimal footprint for when I'm in the field. I have a 10L Arc'teryx messenger bag that is waterproof that I'll store my recorder. Any thoughts…

Does anyone know what happened to Sound & Picture Magazine? Did they stop publishing? I haven’t seen a new one in a long time and I can’t even find link to old ones which had some fantastic interviews and articles. It would be a real shame if they weren’t archived somewhere.

Hi all, I’m planning another early morning birdsong recording session – this time near the Kabli Bird Station in Häädemeeste, Kabli. It’s a beautiful spot right by the coast, known for its bird migration studies. I'll be bringing my trusty Sound Devices MixPre-6 II recorder, and fingers crossed the birds will be active and cooperative! The plan is to record from around 3:00 AM to 5:00 AM, just before sunrise. We'll see how it goes! The session is scheduled for the first weekend of May (night of May 3rd into the early hours of May 4th). Here’s a bit more about the location: https://visitestonia.com/en/kabli-bird-centre-1

I was cleaning out my basement and found a stash of unused Quantegy 480 tapes, both 5" and 7" reels in original boxes and wrappers. Does anyone have any use for them? I'm located in Brooklyn. Available for free and for pick-up.

AI might do a lot of magical things but I really don’t like when our inner creativity is challenged or replaced. Me and my Hasselblad, my microphones and mixpre or my Sony F5 and optics helps me capture a thought or visualise an idea or notion. Having something doing this for me reduce my process and what make me feel good, having achieved something from my inner thoughts. “Converting anything into audio opens new possibilities for the entertainment industry and creative professions” they say. I guess a lot of true work be very sparse in 10 years. it just make me sad. https://zeyuet.github.io/AudioX/ …

I need to rent a Hi8 format video deck to dub off the video from a performance from the 1990s. Local SF area would be best, and I can use a Hi8 camera to dub from if need be. I only need to copy about 45 min of material, for Lines Ballet's archive. Anyone have or know where I could find such a thing? thanks!

I am late to the party but curious if anyone here might be into euroracks / modules / etc. just got my first nifty case starter kit and ordered a kit to assemble a mixer module with my feeble solder skills. Will be buying some factory made modules, but Hoping to build more kits and also some new ones from scratch. I cant believe for how much i was into electronics and electronic music, i was completely oblivious to this world of modular noise making

Hello everyone, I would like to know what software you use to recover audio from Wisycom MTP61 transmitters. Wisycom does not have any proprietary app to perform this process smoothly, and I would like to know how you approach the recovery of signal drop from the transmitter packs. Thank you very much!

I work mostly on smaller docs and commercials, so I rarely have a boom operator or a second. After looking through a lot of behind the scenes videos and photos at the start of the year, I am seeing most boom ops not wearing headphones, earbud or anything in their ears. Are boom ops not listening to what the mic is picking up anymore? What about communicating with the mixer? I have gear such as a MM1 etc, for a boom op, It just does not get used much, but I was finding it odd to see people booming and not listening to what it was picking up.

Hey everyone! I’m writing this post because I’m looking for advice from those who currently work in production sound professionally. A bit of background: I’m currently 23 & went to film school where I decide I would learn how to mix on set & learn about gain staging & signal flow. While I was there I talked my way into mixing and worked as a production sound mixer for a fair amount of short films. Since then I’ve mixed a lot more indie shorts, interviews, and other projects. My plan is to branch out and eventually work as a sound assistant or utility sound technician on features, television, or commercials. I think that working under a more experi…
