Of course everyone is knocking TC in this part (some of the meaner comments talk about "midget rock", etc.) but I think it looks pretty amazing. from some magazine site: "The first look at Tom Cruise as womanizing rocker Stacee Jaxx in Adam Shankman’s big-screen adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical Rock of Ages has hit the Web on Tom Cruise . com The ’80s are in full effect with a backlit, shirtless Cruise sporting long hair for the character, who, in the stage show, sings Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” and is a part of other numbers including “I Wanna Know What Love Is.” "

Doing corporate IV's today - The client has their heart set on the large foyer of a big government department of a big open plan building - I'm kicking myself for not bringing the CS3e, he notices me screwing my face up and carrying on and says "don't worry, I'm always torturing soundies" Not sure if it made me feel better of not ;-)

Hey guys I would like to talk to everyone about the shoot I am on. I apologize in advance for turning this great forum into a shoulder for me to cry on, so to speak, but I wanted to reach out to others who have possibly...and probably...experience some of the same things as me. I am currently working on an Indy production in the Philly suburbs. Its a teen love triangle drama, with some sensitive and emotional material, as most movies do. I always try to handle myself in a professional manner, follow set etiquette, respect the jobs of other crew members, as well as the personal space of the actors. This job, in particular, I have found opposition at every turn …

This is too funny. Somebody just posted this on Gearslutz, but I had to repost it here: I know it's mainly for FOH guys, but I like to think the sentiments apply to anyone doing sound for a living. Nice bit -- funny and entertaining, and the singing's good, too.

http://www.guardian....idents-survival Heavy rain, high winds and floodwaters swept over Louisiana and Mississippi on Wednesday, as Isaac was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm and a fortified levee system appeared to have saved New Orleans from disaster. Rescuers picked up dozens of residents who had ignored warnings to leave low-lying areas, seven years to the day after hurricane Katrina devastated the city. Power lines were cut and debris littered the streets, prompting authorities in New Orleans to declare a dusk-to-dawn curfew. Louisiana officials said they would intentionally breach a levee in Placquemines parish, south of New Orleans,…

Hi all. . . It's been a lot of fun reading what some of you folks are saying about poor little ol' me here in Kansas and my film-dreams-coming-true project. I just wanted to correct a few misconceptions. Someone mentioned that we were using a 416 and figured "we'd get what we are paying for" (in other words, not much). In point of fact, the audio we are getting is just stupendous on this shoot. Our sound mixer, Jithu, was an electrical engineer before switching to sound design and now has two degrees in sound design (including an MFA). He knows what he is doing, and with a great young boom operator (a wonderful young man by the name of Adam), we're getting ever…

Hey guys, I'm over in The US from Sydney for the next 8 months, shooting a new science based reality build show, and we ran into some Union officials whilst shooting in the heart of a downtown square in a major west coast city. They claimed they had received hundreds of phone call complaints that we were shooting there, and threatened to effectively shut us down by picketing us because we were not using "local crew" The thing is, we were using local crew. Local staging crew. Local camera operator. Local camera assist. Local productions runners. Local researchers. Numerous local hire companies. Of course being an OS company, we do have some of our own working t…

For you fellow oldsters who are union members: where are you guys at about various retirement issues esp re the union? My Local (16) has changed the rules for early retirement effective Jan1, making it MUCH less attractive to retire before 65 (the pension plan is in trouble, so many changes, also incl higher percentages taken from both employers and employees also start Jan 1). Are other locals having similar issues? Around here there are a lot of Boomers heading for the exit over this new situation..... phil p

"United Broke My Guitar" Pretty funny video done by a musician whose $3500 guitar was ruined by UA (he even saw them do it), who then stonewalled him. He vowed to make songs/videos about his experience and youtube them--this is the first of 3. His experience getting an airline (esp UA) to take responsibility for anything pretty much mirrors mine, but his response is WAY more effective probably than just doing the phone thing with a string of disinterested employees. Awful news in today's Daily Variety: U Phasing Out Feature Post-Production Sound Dept. Universal seems to be looking to get out of the feature post sound business, at least for now. Wednesday Universal notified employees in its feature sound mixing department that their jobs will be phased out. Studio will stop accepting new feature sound projects and release employees as the projects they are on wrap. Up to 20 jobs will be phased out. U said its remaining post services are unaffected, including: TV sound; projection; digital intermediate; ADR; Foley; archival; restoration; feature trailers; mastering; laybacks; picture editorial; Avid rentals and supp…

I knew when I used a Nagra IV and had it monitoring off the playback head if I tried to slate a scene or a head of a new roll I couldn't concentrate. A real non-leathal weapon.

Hey all, Just wanted to share what my sound utility showed me today, a brilliant way to save 24 AA batteries per week, and thats just for two slates. I had him cut down the AA battery sled for my TS-3 slate in order to act as a wedge to hold a single rechargeable 9V in the battery compartment. A charged 9V reads 8.4 and holds all day (13 hour day today). Thought I would share this info in case its new to your ears, as it was new to mine... Michael B. Koff, CAS

Diana Pokorny was the producer on Valentine's Day who was passionately committed to having the whole production "go green" as much as possible. There were lots of successes and some real failures, but the thoughtful and persistent effort made by all was fairly remarkable. L.A. Times writer Richard Verrier wrote a really nice article about our efforts. For makers of 'Valentine's Day,' going on location means going green Saving energy, cutting waste and recycling on the set help lower the movie's carbon footprint and raise the bar for 'green filmmaking.' By Richard Verrier February 10, 2010 The star-studded romantic comedy "Valentine's Day" is expected to generat…

Recently, I found two sections of my Vdb XL-QT are unable to be locked tightly. Used indoor, the pole is alright, but when the blimp and windjammer are on, the two collars of the pole simply can’t hold the weight and those two sections would easily turn. I wonder why it happens. I rarely use this pole in unusual locations like the beach. Is there anything I can do to fix it by myself instead sending it back to Vdb or even purchasing a new pole? My appreciation.
