I am seriously considering sending in my version one Nova to get the VRX transmitter installed. Curious if anyone here has done this and if there are any improvements in the updated ERX transmission as well? I am told they replace the side panel adding an extra antenna port so it sounds like I won’t be losing anything in the process.

I know many here, if they use DMS, may well use it with a shotgun mic and, of course, will be hugely experienced with this. But, nonetheless, one or two may find something of interest in my just finished three-part blog post series on double mid side (DMS), with a heavy focus on recording outside with more standard cardioids for the two mid mics. It's a practical take, with a heavy focus on rigging, but also with comparison to less-used horizontal B-format. And plenty of samples to download. Part 1 focuses on rigging options, covering the two options using end-address cardioids and using side-address cardioids: https://drbadphil.com/double-mid-side-part-1-rigging-o…

Hi all, long time since I been here, but this one is bugging me I am mostly using USBpre2 as additional preamps for my SD633. I was just doing some tests with the USBPre2, trying to compare it with some other preamps. So, I set my sampling to 192kHz on my 633, and sent the signal from my USBPre2 to ch6 of my 633. Then I tried to see the results on spectrum analyzer. I open the recording with the Izotope RX and see that there is some digital noise at the sampling frequency (48kHz in my case) and that my signal's frequency is cut around 24kHz. Meaning, the line out signal obviously underwent AD/DA conversion with the sampling frequency inside the US…

Now that we’re in 2023. This fine unit’s life cycle is going on 9 years old. Has anyone heard of an imminent update? Thanks.

After being a professional videographer for a decade, my focus has been shifting to the sound department for the past year or so. I currently own a Sennheiser ME66 and, having grown accustomed to the Sennheiser 416s we use at my day job, I recently compared the two out of curiosity. I was surprised by how brittle the ME66 sounded in comparison and, naturally, I am now considering an upgrade mic. The 416 was logically my first choice, but I've noticed that people have differing opinions on it. A sound mixer I worked with as a boom op for a short film a few months ago wasn't a big fan, citing the 416's relatively unforgiving pickup pattern (for perspective, we u…

Hi everyone, Does anyone know where to buy these frames in europe? I like the fact they are small on one side. These are from Greg Sextro's cart from the gallery of soundcarts. I am located in belgium.. If someone has advice for finding these wheels, please do so.. I am going to make a quite similar cart. Thanks in advance, Arne

I'm ending up in more and more loud locations (e.g., factories and music venues). I don't want to keep cranking the volume on my cans. So I'm looking for some headphones that offer greater isolation than the standard Sony 7506. I'm really used to the 7506, but will consider headphones built around other drivers. I know about (and once wore) the Remote Audio HN-7506 High Noise Headset, with up to 45dB reduction, but what else? https://remoteaudio.com/products/hearing/high-noise-headset/ Anyone tried the Beyer Dynamic DT 770 M that says it reduces exterior sound by 35 dBA. https://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/p/dt-770-m And …

Hi, I invested in the SD888 earlier this year and so far loving it. I'm getting more aquianted with Dante and considering how I might use for future applications to expand my system that require more than 8 inputs. The obvious route for expansion to me is the SL-2, and while thats the most streamline / compact / film applicable solution, I am curious about other devices that might buy me the extra channels and also give me more versatility (aka more universal mic/line inputs), while also saving me a bit of $$. So far some of the most interesting options are: RDL SF-XMN4 - 4 mic/line inputs, 48v ph, compact. For $750ish it seems like th…

I have been revising my class modules for my production sound class at Rose State College. I have been researching all morning, and this is what I came up with. I did use Grammarly to help me craft this. I am looking for any input that would allow me talk about this Elephant in the room. I did confirm that at least Zaxcom uses floating-point technology in their mixers' internals, but still has gain control for each channel. As I understand this, it is called Neverclip. I had an argument with Google Gemini over this, and it sort of conceded that 32-bit was not the answer to all sound recordings. I use all the tools I can get to do research except ChatGPT. Our college has l…

Hey everyone, I just purchased a secondhand pair of DPA lav mics. Apparently the seller purchased them from an estate sale, and didn’t have a way to test them. They were advertised by the seller as being brand new or very lightly used DPA 4060’s. The price was good so I decided to take a risk. Now that I have received them, I can see that the label which would identify the model has been removed on both of the mic cables. This is slightly suspicious to me, since the 4060s sell for more than the 4061s. With that said, is there any other way for me to physically identify which of these mic models these lavs are? Because if …

Hi, I have a question about the DCR822. What does the RF signal graph on the top mean? I'm also very curious about the RF signal graph on the bottom.

Hi everyone, Has anyone here had hands-on experience with the VDB FCS-12 control surface? I'm considering it for use with my Sound Devices Scorpio recorder and would appreciate any feedback from real-world use. From what I’ve read, it offers: 12 channels with trim, fader, and PFL controls Dedicated transport, arming, and slate mic activation buttons A master fader and assignable controls Two fader types: SOFT for responsiveness and FIRM for precision Rugged design with dust protection, ideal for outdoor use I’m particularly curious about: How it performs in fast-paced produ…

Someone used my Comteks and asked to buy them. I don't know how to describe them. They work very well and the range is good, 600 feetish. They are labled with "A", I'm assuming thats the frequency? Are they VHF?? What would be a fair price for a TX and 3 RX, 3 ComTek headphones LS-3 (new) Thanks! Leo PS. The antenna is labled "E", and is about 14"

What are peoples thoughts on the new control surface? I think it looks amazing and is a great successor to the mix 8. I do hope that the trim pots can be fully routable as faders or zaxnet trims tho, that way you can have 16 faders in a super tiny control surface. I have gotten used to mixing 12 tracks from the bag with my nomad 12 + fp8 combo so mixing with rotary faders is not a problem for me. I love how flexible and simple the fp8 is so I hope that carries on into the Aria. Either way I am very intrigued. Love the rugged design and maintenance free faders, also the zax hub integration and nomad compatibility. Great job zaxcom!

Hey all -- I have been wanting a DPA 4560 binaural headset mic for some time, but I can't really justify the $1500+ cost right now (headset, plus microdot adapters). So my idea is this: I do already own a pair of DPA 4060's. If I can rig up one of the DPA Dual Headset Mounts, so that I can attach and orientate my 4060's, it should effectively be the same thing, right? Sure, it won't be as elegant, but it'll get the job done just fine. I've thought about using some wire similar to Ursa wire rigs, and wrapping it around the earpieces -- so that I can run the mic cables along the wires, …

I have a bunch of unusable lavs. 10 to be exact. DPA had the hardening wire problem that got corrected. But long term COS11 seams like a bad investment. The wire become stinky and sticky! Sanken should correct this somehow.

Hi all, I’ve been looking into adding some custom molded in-ears to my kit for a few different reasons, but mainly so I have better isolation and can monitor at lower levels in loud environments. I’ve been testing out pairs from Alclair and Ultimate Ears as they both have places in Nashville where I can take in my mixer and compare models. I’ve been leaning towards the flat response versions of both, the UE RR+ Pro and the Alclair Studio4 Quad Driver. I would love to hear if anyone has experience on set with either or if anyone has other recommendations for custom in-ears with flat response (the universal fit cones always irritate my ears after an hour or two). …

Small recorders have gone big! There are now many "pocket recorders" available for well under $250 that have all the features we would typically ask for that previously have cost much more. For example both the Tascam DR-10L Pro and the Diety PR-2 have timecode functionality (both LTC-with-a-cable and wireless jam options), limiters and very long battery life and record capability. They also all seem to have 32 bit float these days.. but I guess let's not go there I mostly want to know how they sound paired with really good lavs. I'd like to use one of these to plant a 4060 or two on a boat to ride along with planted cameras and get something that might make …
