Can someone help me out with how the Zaxcom eco system works? From what I know, their stuff records to a 'propiatary' .zax file, that needs to be converted to BWF after offloading. Situation: Client shoots with 20+ Zax recorders (and no, I have no clue what kind of them, client is on vacation now, but I have time, so I want to be ahead.) My job is to autosequence them and put them into one giant 50 track / 24 hour+ BWF file. That's no issue, but converting all the inputs to BWF before I do my thing seems silly. I think .ZAX is plain PCM data, am I right? Can someone help me with some info on how things are stored? (Short testclips would be nice!) …

Does anyone have experience with payment via Stripe? An old client hired me for a one-day shoot (completed last week), said they would pay me directly, and now want me to sign up with Stripe. Half way through the sign up they want my DOB, SSN, bank info, and then there's a contract or contract-like document talking of fees and charges. I've emailed Isaac at Crew Mama, asking about such charges. So far, no response.

A nice story: ‘Birds Are My Eyesight’ For some blind birders, avian soundscapes are a way to map the world around them. Increasing noise pollution is imperiling that navigation. ----- On an average morning, Susan Glass can sit on the patio at her condominium complex in Saratoga, Calif., and identify as many as 15 different bird species by ear: a steller’s jay, an acorn woodpecker, an oak titmouse. For her, birding is more than a hobby. “Birds are my eyesight,” said Ms. Glass, a poet and a professor of English at West Valley Community College who has been blind since birth. “When I check into a hotel in Pittsburgh, I might reme…

Everyone has their favorite scene from a movie. For me, it's this one…. It always reminds me of when I was a kid watching TV with my Dad in our living room. WHAT'S YOURS?

I was having a discussion with (what I suspect is) a young filmmaker on a different forum. and he's asking for a way to crank the post sound levels up more than 30dB, 30dB being the current limitation of Fairlight. I asked, "why would you need to adjust post sound levels up +30dB? That sounds incredibly extreme!" I come from old-school Pro Tools where we were limited to I think either 10dB or 12dB without adding an extra Trim plug-in for additional range. Even 10dB for normal dialogue is exceptionally rare (to me). I did some quick math and came up to the conclusion that 30dB works out to 1000 times the intensity of a 0dB signal, (subjectively) 8 times as loud…

Sound on. My first post... I've been searching for films that convey the life of a sound recordist, especially focused on natural environments and ambient sounds. I imagine an adventurous traveller recording mysterious sounds in obscure, silent places. 0 results. Unacceptable! The "closest" I got was Berberian Sound Studio (2012), a film I saw in an empty, silent cinema in Edinburgh in 2012 This is almost the opposite of what I am looking for, as it's based in a studio Another inspiration was Upstream Color (2013). Here there is this strange guy recording pigs and other unconventional natural sounds. He then uses the sounds in a synth instrument. …

this is totally off the sound-book but: I want to give a present to a UK family. My German family loves a game called „Scotland Yard“. Is this known amongst UK families or will it be (hopefully) a surprise?

So we all have this idea that around 1 kHz is the average freq for human voice. Maybe it's between 800 and 2,000 Hz? I've read how our hearing is particularly attuned to those frequencies because of this. My recent activities have brought this into question. I just got a free phone app called Pano Tuner, which features an active, moving note-and-frequency display. I've been experimenting with trying to hold pitches and guess at notes (learn perfect pitch), which is super fun. My lowest note is about 96 Hz in between A and G flat. (Throat singing can bring that down to about 56 Hz.) My absolute highest pitch is around 1446 Hz, between F and G flat. (But I have p…

I've been in the location sound business for about 30 years, in the U.S. I've posted here a few times over the years on various topics. I'm re-visiting here now in Nov of 2022 checking to see if there's been any recent non-union "rate" discussions, as in compensation for work performed. I have found some old compensation rate discussions. So, have I just not searched here correctly? Anyone in the Definitive Know if there's a current discussion going on? Let me know. Otherwise... perhaps, in light of recent inflation, new discussions on compensation rates may be in order? Why my motivation know? I'm recently hearing of, and seeing in print online, some rates t…

Hi all I am reading Jay's book "Producing Great Sound for Film and Video", and would like to listen audio example files, but the companion site doesn't work anymore (http://www.greatsound.info). Does anyone previously downloaded all the audio files and pdf from the companion site and could share them to me ?

Hey all you fans of music, recording, live tv, and history, check out the Johnny Cash DVD sold at Starbucks and other places I'm sure. It is a trip in the wayback machine. The 1969 show was a treasure trove of performances, live recordings and various styles, be it clothes or music. Check out the size of the mic he wears on his chest. Check out the audience at the world famous Ryman Auditorium. Hear how great it all sounded live. The video is old school sweet treat to look at. I could have many discussions concerning many of these aspects if anyone is interested. CrewC

Text by Eric Nelson May 24, 2023 https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-new-yorker-documentary/keys-to-the-city Quote: Anyone who has locked them-self out of a car or building knows the panicky feeling of vulnerability that sets in when the door you took for granted will no longer open. The director and cinematographer Ian Moubayed found himself in that exact situation several years ago, when he got locked out of his New York City apartment in the middle of the night. He found a locksmith to help him get back in, and he realized that locksmiths have a unique window on the lives of New Yorkers—they are …

Fox News Article Has anyone seen these A.I. Generated fake Joe Rogan podcasts? I immediately started thinking about how it could be used for ADR or even to clean up reference tracks. I remember reading years ago about Roger Ebert and how they used a large sample library of his DVD commentary to create a synthesized voice / sampler for him to use with a keyboard.

This is too funny, at least in hindsight. First time ever my double alarm for an early call this morning was set for PM by mistake, so after 20yrs i am finally in sync with time of day on my slate. I am now switching my phone clock to 24 hr time. There was a mad rush to just barely make it in on time this morning (and talent even more late than I was which was an added bonus). Pushing my vertical cart in a hurry to beat the rain on top of it all, went down a small slope into the street to get to the loading dock and went DOWN on the cart. Literally. Cart fell forward and stupid me did not let go. I can laugh at it all now with only a few scraped shins from the metal but …

Dear soundies, I wanted to ask if you use any tricks to estimate the field of view of respective lenses in order to quickly estimate how close the boom & the body of the operator can come to the frame? I assume it comes intuitively with years of experience but I was wondering if anyone has any tips. I've been booming for about a year and a half now and getting better at estimating how close I can get but still need a lot of practise to become more precise & quick at it. I'm doing mostly TV and doco work in which the framing is rarely pre-determined and in which sound dept is only 1 person. On that note : does it ever happen in d…

Hello sound location enthusiasts! I'm a Brazilian audio professional currently based in Canada, and I would love to hear your insights on a topic that has been on my mind. I'm considering returning to Brazil and am particularly interested in opportunities to work on international audio projects, such as documentaries, news reports, and short films. As someone with experience and knowledge of both Brazil and Canada, I believe that my ability to provide invoices from my Canadian-based company could be an advantage. However, I'm curious to know if international companies commonly hire local freelancers for such projects in Brazil. Your experiences …

Hi Members- Before jumping into the Zaxcom family, I wanted to hear your thoughts on the range of Zaxnet on a Nomad without any additional amplification or antennae. Here's the question: Will Zaxnet (without any additional amplification or antennae) have a better range than my old Comtek M-72 to PR-72's? Will it rival my Lectrosonics 50 mw LMa beltpack transmitter in IFB mode running to Lectro R1a's??? Thanks in advance for anyone able to give me a rough comparison.... -Vincent
