For an upcoming job I will have to record a discussion with 11 participants. It will be filmed with 2 cameras with Timecode-Sync. It is not a live production - so there will be a real post production. Therefore I will deliver a multitrack recording. I have offered two versions: 1. the two main speakers will wear lavaliers (dpa4060) , the rest of the people will be covered with the sound boom (MKH50). 2. the two main speakers will wear a lavalier, the rest of the people will be recorded with table microphones (1 Sennheiser ME36 with small gooseneck per 2 people). Hi all i met Franck by casualty, in NY when he was recording Dellaventura in 1997. The set was under my hotel ( pioneer hotel at this moment) I introduced myself, he invites me to stay with him, close to the nagra and drop me a Comtek. He was very kind, I was starting my sound mixer career at this moment. Now 25 years later, i would like to get in contact with him to say thanks! and share my 25 years experience. Hey everyone. I need some advice. I want to record sfx, both hard fx and foley, not to much ambience stuff but i still want to have a decent sound for that aswell. But mostly close proximity, focused sounds that i can process in post, and experiment. Especially pitch shifting and slowing down samples. I want to find a good microphone setup. I currently own 1 sennheiser 8040 and i was thinking about getting another one, and also 1 sennheiser mkh 8050. Howdy Forum People. It's been a minute since I've been here, but this forum was integral to learning pro sound and to my business' success. You guys were amazingly helpful to me as I learned the business of ENG sound - Thank you! (and yes, I have made a donation to this very valuable site). Hello Guys, Last week I had a prank shoot and getting ready to go for the next one on a couple of days. It's all outdoors and constantly moving. One person going to people in a street event like a parade and engaging in awkward consversations. I used a flower brooch and proped a DPA 4080 lapel mic, pointing out since its a cardioid mic. I had the gain quite up in order to get further away sounds and I also had placed a fully hidden cos11 on the actress with the appropriate levels for her voice. A last-minute job in Nepal just came up requiring a recorded live translation setup. Many years ago, I did a similar arrangement in sit-down interview scenarios that didn't require recording the live translation. Inelegant at best, using a Shure FP22 headphone amp, a desktop PTT microphone and a couple of Comtek 72mHz systems. The Nepal job has asked for a verite solution. Literally, a walk and talk, as well as a sit-down interview arrangement. Like a roving "UN translation" setup. I'm curious about what protocols sound mixers are requesting/requiring on non-union sets? A recent call about a corporate gig has surprisingly lax protocols considering the high profile client, so much so that I felt that I had to pass on it. I'm wondering if I'm being overly cautious and need to adapt?

I had a shouting scene in the rain where I wired the shouting female talent with a Countryman B6(low-sensitivity, red band, servo wired) via a SMQV(level set to 5) to 411a(compatible mode: NA 400, +5dbu, line in to 788t w/ limiter off). While the 411a never showed overmodulation sign and the the meter on 788t never hit red, the shouting is obviously distorted. The only cause I deduced is that the B6 itself was overloaded. However, with the maximum SPL of 130db of a low-sens B6 on the talent's chest, it's hard to get my head around how the overload from the lav is possible. Is there any other factor in the chain that might've gone wrong?

I'm prepping for a movie and one of the characters spends a lot of time talking on the phone. Before I talk to props does anyone have any tips on hiding a mic and transmitter in one and placing the mic? The film takes place in the early 90's so it would be one of those bulky cordless phones. There should be some space for hiding.

Recently ran into an issue with ultrasonic security system messing with Sennheiser G3’s. Does anyone make a low pass filter to go between mic and transmitter to avoid this issue? We got around it with a wired boom and 2 hardwired lavs, but it was not easy. Please don’t tell me to just buy “Lectro”, I know that’s the long range answer, but when working on micro budget indies, it’s just not practical.

A thing I never understood is, why low cuts, either build in or as a module, are recommended here or there on boom mics. Most devices we connect a boom mic to, either a recorder or some TX provide a low cut, presumably in the analog input stage. Is there any advantage to have a low cut close to or within the mic?

I have a client that is recording some 40 video podcasts over the next 6 months or so in a studio on a virtual set. All of the guests are viewed and heard via Zoom. I am micing him and using a Comtek with the typical curly in the ear, news reporter style for him to hear the Zoom audio. We just finished the first six episodes this week. I have about 25 days before the next recording session. The presenter is ok with the one size fits many ears, but not loving it. I suggested we go with an audiologist molded earpiece. Hi Does anyone have any insight how they are rigging the lavs during competition on Survivor Australia? I get that they have both the Tx and the mic hidden in the buffs around the necks, but how are they waterproofing and wind proofing them? I mean, they are taking such a beating, including lots of full submerging in water, and still sounding pretty good. Thanks / Rasmus

I was up on Sounderday this morning and one of the many cans we were kicking was movies with soft dialog and how difficult it was to capture. Tonight I watched the 2019 film "Poison Rose" with John Travolta and Morgan Freeman. Will Loftin was the mixer. Scott Johnson was the boom op.
