Been following this show and the podcast. A great show! The shots are great, and it's always compelling and great acting. And then of course the sound is great, courtesy of Phil Palmer. Great work! Couldn't have been easy either. Very wide shots and very often never cut very much. Great job. Just a tip...

Just watching Mrs Maisel on amazon... In the day of Zaxcom and Neverclip, it's surprising to still hear the old distorted voice tracks. Zaxcom TX 👌I could see a day where productions require Zaxcom unless other manufacturers follow suite with Dual converters.

My wife and I have been binge watching all of the seasons of the series "Longmire". Been to many of the locations that the series was filmed at. Walt's cabin in the Valle's Caldera offers amazing vistas and is worth a visit if you are ever in the area. My observation is regarding the quality of the sound. Before Netflix took over production, it was of a high quality. We are currently watching Netflix produced episodes. Apparently wireless lavs became the standard. Rarely hear a boom in many of the scenes. Lavs poorly concealed, many cases of clothing noise, a large disparity in levels between actors and comb filtering occurring when actors are very close t…

Hi all! Here in Canada, today has become an annual "Bell Let's Talk" Day, where people talk pretty openly about their battles with all kinds of mental illnesses. I've noticed that it is almost par-for-the-course that people in the film/tv business burn-out at some point. Long hours and a gig-based economy seem to combine to put alot of strain on nerves, relationships, marriages, physical health. I don't know if the nature of sound work puts any particular flavour on it...probably not...but maybe other's know differently? I've been on the edge of burnout for a couple of months now, and would like to hear how other's deal with the stress. For tho…

What Should a Nine-Thousand-Pound Electric Vehicle Sound Like? (link to New Yorker article)

An interesting article. The writer talks to engineers in Detroit, people at IRCAM, a sound designer in Brooklyn, etc. A well-written 20-minute read. What Should a Nine-Thousand-Pound Electric Vehicle Sound Like? E.V.s are virtually silent, so acoustic designers are creating alerts for them. A symphony—or a cacophony—of car noise could be coming to city streets. By John Seabrook August 1, 2022 I'm pretty sure nonsubscribers can read a few articles without problem: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/08/08/what-should-a-nine-thousand-pound-electric-vehicle-sound-like

Hey friends, I just wrapped a shoot where I shot 4.5 hours worth of interview content on three cameras (Sony FX6 & two Sony A1's) plus a MixPre-6 II recorder. The 4.5 hour recordings were taken in 30-60 minute takes, give or take. I had three Tentacle Sync E mkII's for this shoot, one for each camera, and I had my MixPre-6 II connected to the FX6 via an HDMI cable to give the MixPre timecode. All devices were set to 23.98 recording with the FX6's Tentacle set as the master for timecode. On the MixPre-6 II I had it set to HDMI TC while on the FX6 I had it set to HDMI Timecode Out. I also had the FX6 set to HDMI Rec Control and the MixPre-6 II was set to Rec Trigger HMD…

I am just curious about this and I don't care if I sound dumb - what is the danger? Have gennies actually been hit and exploded, killing people? Why would a generator "draw" lightning at all? Doesn't the lightning seek to release its voltage differential to the closest neutral AKA the earth? Or is a genny neutral? I did hear a verified account of a genny that was hit during a storm in FL. They didn't stop shooting for the storm and then the lights went out. No one died but I'd guess the genny was a goner. But in that case, lightning was striking all over the area, including many hits NOT on the genny. I'm confused.

Got hired on a short film for next week, turns out it's a musical with no spoken lines. So my job will pretty much be playback, which I've never done before so looking for some advice. How do people go about with music playback? I've tried to do some research but haven't found very much on the topic. I've seen playback carts with PT running on a computer, hooked up to some speakers, which is doable for us, but curious the workflow. What I'm imagining is someway to make PT have a timecode stamped input (if that's possible?), then as we playback the songs they'll match the camera TC? Should I send a hop to the camera so it's also recording the track as referenc…

For those who use the MKH50, have you ever had RF interference at any given location? This has rarely happened to me, 2 times in 3-4 years, but each time I've plugged in a second mic, my AT4073a, it has vanished. Just seeing if anyone else has experienced this or if I should have mine looked at.

Anyone know of any great electronics repair shops that can repair thinks like components on a printed circuit board? I've tried to fix a few simple things in the past but I'm not the best with a soldering iron and I really have no idea what I'm doing when it comes to common components on a PCB. So many manufactures no longer service some of their older equipment and when they do, they simply bill you for a new board usually. I've know a few electronics Yoda's over the years who could damn near fix anything. Looking for someone like that. Any suggestions anyone? Thanks in advance. Troy

Hey everyone. Long time lurker, first time poster. I’m doing location sound on a feature soon and it’s being shot mostly in one room and mostly with the main talent on the telephone with the other (voice) actors off camera talking to her through the phone. My plan is to use my DPA4060 as lav on the main actor and then also boom. I’m also hoping to send the off-camera actor’s voice to the telephone speaker in hopes for realistic performances. The off-camera actor will also be lav’d with a 4060 and then also a dynamic microphone to send the audio to the telephone speaker. Hoping that both actors audio will be great and useable. A few questions: 1. Ho…

Hello all, any sage advice out there re LED walled stage acoustics? Only experience I have with them is vehicle interiors so interested to know what acoustic treatments others have used when in open set mode. Thinking baffle boards on wheels, ways to rig them between lamps / above the LED walls etc. Thank you, Chris.

Hi Folks, It's the time again where I stop through to ask... what do you want students to learn? A loaded question I know. While I specifically focus my teaching on location audio we're expanding the program to Audio Production for the Field, Post and Studio Recording. The academics have all sorts of ideas of what audio curricula "should be", but I want to know as a collective of professionals what do you want those coming after you to know? What can they learn to help you, support you and to help round out the field so that you can do your job knowing there's a legacy behind you to carry the tone? Share your thoughts, ask any questions and I'll pa…

Hey everybody! I am currently planning to move to Los Angeles in the coming years with my American wife (currently living in Europe). I've worked as a boom-operator for eight years and would love to continue working in the US. I read that I need 100 days of non-union work before I can join the Local 695. Does anyone have any experience with coming from abroad and joining the Union? Any chance to count my years of experience from abroad? Any and all advice is appreciated!

Hello all, some evening thoughts here. This year is the 20th anniversary of my faithful SQN 4S IVe. I bought it new directly from SQN that made a special feature on my request at no charge (remote pot for ch4). As I realize I am still using it quite regularly and it had never ever failed me and I am about to buy a Sound Devices 888 that no one can tell if it will be obsolete in 5 years or not, I wonder if the era when we used to buy gear as an investment for decades is pretty much gone for good. Yet the prices are still far from affordable for professional gear. There might be still some mikes that we can trust to last and be fully top of the game in 10 yea…

Hello, For a french documentary shoot in NY we are considering renting locally rather than me bringing my kit from France. Surprisingly Gotham audio does not provide the Sound devices 8 series on rental. Any idea where I could rent a documentary kit based around an 833 in New York city? The production is french so they must get an invoice without vat (not applicable). by kit I mean something like that: 833+SL2+ 1 double rx like lectro SRc+2tx like smdb (smqv i think in the USA) or LT +dpa4060 /6060 or cos11. Schoeps mini Cmit +cinela Cosi, boom vdb L or equivalent Ktek. Shoeps cmc6+mk41+osix. A small stereo set like schoep…

I've been fortunate enough to have a couple gigs that have taken me deep into the wilderness. And I've been frustrated that I'm inevitably tethered to a film crew, which makes wildlife recording a hit or miss proposition ... I'm tethered to the priorities of camera. So, I would love to set up a recording trip on my own ... take a guide into the bush for a couple weeks and see what I can get in terms of wildlife recordings. I would love to talk with someone who has recorded wildlife professionally and see what my options are for making this pay for itself. I'm imagining libraries as a possible source, but I also imagine there aren't many libraries that need …

I'm preparing for a film with lots of emotional scenes set in the pouring rain, with sometimes characters talking under umbrellas, some other scenes in raincoats, and in some scenes the characters just getting drenched in the rain. One horrible thing in common for these raining scenes is that they're all filled with heavy and emotional dialogues. What's worse is that the protagonist is an amateurish kid, which means that ADR is the very last resort and will be almost impossible to get it right. I won't risk my Cmit-5U for the humidity, so I'm thinking of using 416 or CS-3e as my boom mic in a Rycote windshield and Remote Audio rain cover. However, the rain drops will…

Shout out to the sound team working on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Alot of thought clearly went into the immersive aspects of the dialogue capture, with good boom work and lavs that sound open. Never took me out of the moment. I find myself taken out of immersion alot lately with lav-heavy scenes in other shows, this one has an old-school feel (in all the good ways).

I'm looking for suggestions about how to handle multiple, (3) actors in full body robot like costumes. They need to have full duplex coms with each other and the director. The production said do you have comteks for the actors. Yes, but do you understand that the actors own dialogue need to be iso'd (is that a word) from their comtek feed otherwise it will feed back to them and cause a distracting echo that will likely be too much for their own intelligibility. Another problem is the 2 way coms I'm familiar with like the HME systems that the camera departments use; have a large headset and boom mics which probably wouldn't work in a full body enclosed costume. Any other…
