Hello all :-) I have an upcoming shoot that will take place at the beach near the sea. The director probably wants it close to the water, the actors will go into the water at the end (we will probably cut and get rid of wires for that shot). I am wondering which microphones would be best to achieve the smoothest consistent background. I have Kmr81 mics, MK41, RSM 191, 416, and Cos11 and 4060 lavs. I never shot near a sea before, just recorded the ambiences and feel the sea ambience is very hard to get right... Obviously, I will try to steer the location as far from the water if not visible in the shot as possible. What are your tho…

Not that I'd ever attempt such a thing... I blinked and the past five years flew by. I'm about to jump on a plane and shoot a low-profile feature in Europe. Last time I did this was in Australia, and setting up cameras / getting the boom out wasn't as big a deal in the wide-open outback space - but this time we'll be "stealing" a few scenes in some busier locations and I'd like as little a footprint as possible. Feels like technology has advanced about twenty years in the past five - how would you approach this type of shoot? Curious what everyone's go to would be. --Chad

Hello All, I've got a sound problem that's stumping, not surprising considering I'm a camera guy. I've got a Sony UTX-B40 body pack that has started acting up on me. Whenever a microphone is plugged it sends constant static. With no mic it's totally silent. Here's a list of all the things I've tried without fixing the issue. Changed the mic out for a COS-11D with the Sony TRS. RF setting set to low. Wide range of different channels. Low gain, Auto gain, turned the attenuator all the way up. Linked to different RXs. Swapped out the battery pack. Changed battery type settings. Changed compander setting on TX and RX. At this point I'm at t…

Hey guys, Here's a new version of my currently Windows-only 788T control software. It can control most functions of a 788T remotely via USB. This is meant to be a replacement from here on out for Goose, my previous version. This should sort out a lot of GUI/scaling issues people were having. I re-wrote the frontend in .NET MAUI. It looks better and should scale appropriately across different screen sizes now. Download link and screenshots at the end of this post. Changes from last version: - Better UI - Persistent user settings for storing preferred COM port & temperature units. (The gear button by the power button) …

3 weeks ago I sent an MKH 8060 (purchased in 03/2012) to Sennheiser for repair via my dealer with the following symptoms: intermittent "high mic noise with reduced output gain and crackling sounds like static discharge" The microphone had heavy signs of wear, most of the coating had come off. Two rods of the side grille were bent from a handling accident. It was one of my workhorse-gear and was used on numerous productions throughout the years. Last wednesday I got a notice from the dealer that the mic is back, with no other comment but a bill, listing a handling fee of 25€ and the serial number of the replacement mic. I retreived it on friday and I got ba…

Hi, will it be possible to tune the Shure BLX2 to the Wisycom MCR54? There are companders for Shure on the MCR54, but probably not directly for the BLX2, is it possible that one will also work? thanks

I’ve always used Garfield softies, but the one I use on my 416 has just about had it. Since they no longer make them, I’ll have to switch to another brand. I never liked the original Rycote ones, I always felt that the slightest breeze would produce wind noise. These days there are more options available. What do people recommend?

Has anyone compared the “mic mic” of the 8018 to the 8060 yet? Would they match in a couple boom situation?

What are the biggest firmware leaps you have made in terms of upgrades? I bought a QRX200 and 2 TRXLA3 with ancient firmware and wondering how bad of an idea it is to upgrade them on my own vs sending them in to Zaxcom

Hey all you brilliant electrical minds. I just purchased some Shure WL 184 hypercardioid lavs to use with my Lectrosonics SMQV transmitters. I replaced the connectors with TA5F and tried wiring them up based on Lectro's "Simple 3-wire 5V" diagram using a jumper across pins 2 and 4. It worked but it had some noticeable hiss and required a lot of gain (about 35 and up on the SMQV) and was pretty nasal and lacking in bass. Then I found a wiring method on the Shure website that said to try just wiring up pins 1, 2, and 3 to ground, bias V, and mic in respectively. This provides the mic with only 2 volts and not the 5V that the Lavs prefer. This also worked and sounded better …

Hello, I use MixPre 6 for quick-and-dirty stereo recording when I have almost no setup time and just need a stereo recording. I'd love your help optimizing this to be as fast as possible to setup and postprocess. Using a bushing adapter, I attach a stereo bar to the 1/4 20 mount on top of MixPre, clip in two Schoeps mics, connect with 2 18" XLR cables, and hit record. 1. I researched cold shoe mounts but couldn't make heads or tails - is there an easier way to get the stereo bar onto MixPre? I've taken to pre-attaching it and then carrying it in my backpack, but it's a bit unwieldy. 2. Schoeps's "desert island stereo set" in…

I am looking into getting either the Sennheiser MKH70 or the Sennheiser 8070 Long Shotgun for Airshow interviews. I usually use my Sanken CS-3e for this situation, but last year, I decided to test out the Schoeps Cmit5u (performed much better than I anticipated). Both the Sanken and Schoeps do a wonderful job, but I feel something with a longer "reach" would be better suited for this task. The boom pole I am using is a K-Tek K-87CCR. Lavalier mics are not being considered at this time. Most of the shots showcase the featured aircraft behind the interviewee, thus being wider, requiring a longer "reach." Additionally, the surrounding environme…

I’d like to revisit this old but still very relevant subject to see what people are using. I started out by using G2/3’s, which worked fine for the most part. I then used the Lectro 100 series units because I thought that they might be a good solution, but scrapped that idea when the Zaxcom IFB100/ERX2TCD system came out. Hop and sync in one box? Awesome. The problem with that system is that the IFB100 has a fragile antenna and can’t be anywhere near other devices in your bag such as a Comtek transmitter because it bleeds a squelching sound that is very nasty. The IFBs are rather large, poor build quality, and if you don’t get the Audio Dept mod,…

Today I experienced the weirdest mic problem so far. I connected a Rode NT1 to the Sound Devices 664, which went fine for a couple of days until today. Now there's soft static noise around 500Hz and some crackle that fades away if you re-connect it, that should not happen. The WEIRD thing is, is that this NT1 still works fine on the Mixpre-3 II and a DBX preamp. No noise, no crackle. Other microphones (Schoeps, Sanken, Rode) all still work fine on the 664. It is only this specific mic-mixer combo that now suddenly is failing... I changed cables, tried internal AA cell power and other input. Audio (warning, loud pops from di…

Does anyone know what the correct wiring would be for a Deity w.lav Micro for both servo and non-servo Lectrosonics (5-pin) transmitters? The cable is 2 wire. I know that their DA5S microdot adapter works best for me on both my Lectro SMWB and UM400 (not A) transmitters. I can't seem to take apart their microdot connectors to see what magic is happening inside.

Hello everyone. I just received a new (open box) condition VDB XL-QT in the mail a couple of days ago and am having difficulties with two of the collars, particularly the first one. In order to extend the thinnest section of the boom pole, I must first slightly extend the next one down and hold onto that while I unlock the first. Otherwise, I can't get it to unlock. Except for one other section, all the other collars open fine, but the first section in particular seems impossible to open by itself. I wondered if perhaps I should lubricate this collar, but their website suggests that the QT collars shouldn't need this. Considering I bought the pole in "open box" …
