On Saturday, February 13th, Hank Garfield suffered a serious stroke and was taken to nearby Saint Joseph’s Medical center in Burbank, CA. Hank is in the Acute Recovery ward which is a state of the art stroke recovery center. He is undergoing many hours of daily physical, occupational and speech therapy and is on his way to making a long recovery from this serious event. I believe Hank will be in the hospital for another month or two as he pushes forward with his recovery. I know many of you older mixers and boom ops know Hank from his days as a cable man, boom operator and later as a film sound mixer. I have personally known Hank for 33 years. When Ha…

In case you're not tired of the topic, here's a column from today's issue of The Guardian, prompted (I guess), by Nolan's new book. ==== Tenet up: listen, Christopher Nolan, we just can't hear a word you're saying The Tenet director has dismissed critics of his poor sound mixing by blaming us for being too conservative. Why must he keep toying with our perception of sound? We’re all aware of the impossible situation that film currently finds itself in. Screens started shutting in the summer. This is because the big new movies have all been postponed. This is because movie studios are nervous about losses. And this is because Tenet, t…

I was doing a video today for Subway Restaurants International.... So guess what I had for lunch? LOL. You guessed it, tuna!! The rest of the crew wondered why I had a little chuckle to myself at lunch.

I have made a Zoom meeting available to members for use whenever they want -- you can join a meeting without a host. I put up links, both in the Sidebar and at the top of the site in the global header. Clicking on the link will take you to the JWSOUNDGROUP meeting (with the link you will not need a password). Feel free to invite others by directing them to use the link and you can then have a meeting together. So far, I don't think anyone has made use of this. Let me know if it all works and if this is useful for our members. LINK to JWSOUND Meet

Recently, I found two sections of my Vdb XL-QT are unable to be locked tightly. Used indoor, the pole is alright, but when the blimp and windjammer are on, the two collars of the pole simply can’t hold the weight and those two sections would easily turn. I wonder why it happens. I rarely use this pole in unusual locations like the beach. Is there anything I can do to fix it by myself instead sending it back to Vdb or even purchasing a new pole? My appreciation.

Hey Everyone, Back in November, @Rachel Cameron reached out to me about featuring @Eric Toline on an episode of Skeleton Crew. So, I went down to Ft. Lauderdale and met her and Eric at his apartment. We had a good time listening to music, talking and eating some Chinese food. Here is the interview that came out of that (also available on all fine podcasting platforms):

Dobar dan/ Good day! I am Petra Mrsa, an artist from Rijeka, Croatia (www.petramrsa.com) and in this time of being glued to my computer, I was thinking about music, sound and about what people that record audio as their job are doing in this restricted period. The job that I often do is to bring people together to experience noninstitutional and unexpected cooperation. In this special situation of isolation, I would like to invite people to come together through their voices. Voice is personal and communicative and can involve people of different nationalities and distances. I would like to gather the voices of people who mainly enable other beings, appearance…

As location sound freelancers, esp those of us who mostly work short jobs, having the gear prepped and ready to go is kind of an article of faith. We've all had last minute calls for work where we got to ride in like the cavalry and save the day, and maybe acquire a new client. Yesterday I spent some little time going through my stuff (more than I realized) and taking all the batteries out of everything. Seeing my gear in this decidedly UNREADY state bummed me out. I know I needed to do this, if only to save a lot of $ in slowly draining batteries, but the process was strangely unpleasant and made me nervous: "shit! I'm not ready!!!" etc.. Here's hoping …

This is a cool seven-minute radio story from our local public radio station: ===== New Year's Day Music That Hasn't Been Heard in 500 Years The Hagia Sophia cathedral in Istanbul is incredibly reverberant — a sound will echo around and remain audible for eleven seconds. That reverberance shaped nearly a thousand years of music written to be performed inside the cathedral. But no one has been able to listen to what it's like to hear a church choir sing inside the Hagia Sophia for over 500 years. That is, until now. ===== Some more text, and a link to the audio story here: https://www.kqed.org/news/11754695/california-sounds-new-y…

I am working on a movie right now and had a tight fitting cocktail dress on a young lady Saturday night. I hate those things. Wardrobe wants to do the placement because I can not get to it with the dress zipped up. I finally gave her a hide a mic bra clip and it still had clothing rub. I hate to be defeated over this and the rest of the crew just shrugs at the issue. I can tell some appreciate my tenacity and some don't. Any suggestions.

According to an article in New Scientist, ordinary plants make audible* sounds when stressed: (* - Well, audible by dogs and teenagers. Or by 96 kHz files with good mics. Or possibly beating with other sounds up there. At least, they're sounds and apparently reasonably loud.) In the article, drought-stressed tomato plants made 35 sounds an hour... when plant stems were cut, tomato plants made an average of 25 sounds in the following hour... unstressed plants produced fewer than one sound per hour... The implications for farmers and gardeners are obvious. For our productions... well, at least it's another source for stuff …

An interview with the director in today's edition of The Guardian: Making Waves: behind a fascinating documentary about movie sound Professor and director Midge Costin talks about her ear-opening new film that aims to remind audiences just how much work goes into cinematic sound Midge Costin has had it with people forgetting the difference between sound editing and sound mixing every time the Oscars roll around. Once and for all: “Sound mixing brings all the elements together, all the various recorded tracks, and synthesizes them into one soundscape. Editing covers voice, music, effects, ADR – how do they sound?” So, that should be the end of …

Interesting... WAV audio files are now being used to hide malicious code Steganography malware trend moving from PNG and JPG to WAV files. [a couple excerpts] The technique is known as steganography -- the art of hiding information in plain sight, in another data medium. The first of these two new malware campaigns abusing WAV files was reported back in June. Symantec security researchers said they spotted a Russian cyber-espionage group known as Waterbug (or Turla) using WAV files to hide and transfer malicious code from their server to already-infected victims. The second malware campaign was spotted this month by BlackBerry …

It is with great sadness that I report the passing away of Rene Borisewitz last week. Rene was Simon Kaye's maintenance engineer for many feature films until he became a successful sound mixer in his own right. He gave me a place on my first feature film. He is survived by his wife Ulla. His cremation service is on Saturday 5th October 2019 at 10.45 at the Golders Green Crematorium (West Chapel) [Hoop Lane, Golders Green, NW11 7NL] and there will be be a celebration of Rene's life afterwards at The Old Bull & Bush, North End Road NW3 7HE from 12:15.
